AMD Fenghuang 15FF Graphics Chip Equipped APU Shows Up on 3DMark – Faster Than RX Vega M GH, 2 GB HBM2 Clocked at 1200 MHz

AMD is working on a lot of internal projects that have yet to see the light of day, one such project is the Fenghuang 15FF graphics chip for accelerated processing units.
The Fenghuang 15FF APU was spotted last year in an entry within SiSoftware Sandra database but since then, no other info made its way on the web until today.

AMD’s Fenghuang APU Spotted in 3DMark – Faster Than Intel’s Kaby Lake-G Vega Graphics, 2 GB HBM2 Onboard

The AMD Fenghuang 15FF is an internal codename for the graphics while the chip it was tested with is currently codenamed DG02SRTBP4MFA.
There have been different codenames spotted since the chip first leaked out but it should be clear that this is very much an early sample at this stage.

Looking at the specifications reported in 3DMark, the processor itself seems to be a Zen+ based APU part with 4 cores and 8 threads.
The chip is clocked at 3.00 GHz base frequency while turbo frequency is currently not reported correctly. The graphics side features 2 GB of HBM2 memory which is clocked at 1200 MHz (2.4 GHz effective).
This may just be the fastest clocked HBM2 VRAM speeds that AMD has featured on their graphics yet. The core clock for the chip is reported at 300 MHz but that must be idle as the benchmark isn’t reporting boost/turbo clocks correctly at the moment.

We have previously known that the chip features 28 CUs which incorporate 1792 SPs, making it the beefiest APU solution to date.
The AMD supplied Kaby Lake-G chips with RX Vega GPUs come with 24 CUs which has 1536 cores and 4 GB of HBM2 at 945 MHz in comparison.

    AMD/ATI To Demonstrate Never-Before-Seen Hardware at Computex 2018 on 6th June –
Updates on Current and Upcoming Products To Be Made By CEO

In a press release that was forwarded a few hours ago, AMD has mentioned that they will host the Computex 2018 Press Conference on 6th June at 10 A.M. (CST).

The press release mentions that AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, will be hosting the press conference to announce their latest product plans.

AMD Hosting Computex 2018 Press Conference on 6th June – Will Demonstrate Never-Before-Seen Hardware

The most interesting thing about this press conference is that AMD is confirming that they are going to demonstrate never-before-seen hardware at the event.
The following is mentioned in AMD’s press release:

Join the webcast of the AMD COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2018 Press Conference on Wednesday, June 6, 201 at 10 a.m. CST / Taipei

    The one-hour event will feature:

    • Updates on current and upcoming AMD products by AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su and Senior Vice President and General Manager, Computing and Graphics Business Group, Jim Anderson
    • Appearances by AMD technology partners
    • Never-before-seen AMD hardware demonstrations and new details showcasing AMD high performance leadership and innovation
    via AMD

The press conference is going to last an hour so that’s ample time to showcase new stuff. But there are several things that can be interpreted from this press release.
AMD says that the hardware they are going to showcase has never been seen before, but it may have been heard about by the press. Remember, AMD has several products in the pipeline that are expected to release in the future.

In the CPU department, we know that AMD has a couple of Ryzen 2000 series desktop and mobile processors in the work but they don’t sound like much interesting.
What does sound interesting is the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2000 series high-end desktop processors which are definitely heard of before but not seen to date. It will be interesting to see the new AMD X399 Refresh platform and Threadripper 2000 series in action.
AMD also plans to introduce Z490 chipset around the second quarter and that may also see the light of day at the event.

In terms of GPU related announcements, AMD is working on 7nm Vega which is part of their AI and DNN aimed Instinct platform. Earlier in a tweet, AMD had stated that 7nm Vega was already working in their labs.
Aside from that, Navi is possibly going to make an appearance next year and we might get some update on that as AMD’s Polaris chips were also showcased months before their arrival in the gaming market.

7nm @RadeonInstinct product for machine learning is running in our labs.

    — AMDNews (@AMDNews) April 25, 2018

Obviously, we can’t promise anything right now and the hardware can be something entirely new out of the roadmap that is currently public which is what get’s us excited. We will be at Computex at AMD’s press conference to bring you the latest developments live from Taipei. The conference will be live-streamed to the audience sitting around the globe.

I seriously hate it when AMD hypes unreleased products. I thought they might have well and truly learnt that lesson after the let downs of Raja's constant hype and disappointment. I'm so glad he has gone tbh.

I take Hype as a good thing, to fire up some waiting time, and to wonder what they can bring to the table this Year ;)

    PS.
The Power of today GPUs are quite high already, we need New H/W as well as New APIs Implementation (one can't live without another is such times)

Only if it ends up delivering. Some of what Raja implied was nothing but lies. He did more harm than good. As I said, im glad he is gone.

"Only if it ends up delivering." <- 100% True if you comparing & benchmarking with other brands, but if looking for #Ultimate #Smooth Freesync Gaming
then they delivered quite Great piece of New-Tek H/W like Fiji and now Vega64
My GPU needs ~225tW for smooth Ultra/High w/AA Gaming in BF1, Vega 64 @ All Ultra w/AA needs ~160tW to get there (I mean -> 70FPS no=Drops) [Average w/Chill or FPS Cap in Adrenalin]
So there is a big step forward for ATI Radeon 2017/18.... :D
All Games runs on Vega Great Min/Average wise.

GDDR6 Overclocking Potential Revealed – Micron States:
Up To 20 Gb/s Possible With Small Voltage Bump on 16 Gb/s Modules

Micron in their latest research article has revealed the full potential of their upcoming GDDR6 memory which will be equipped with the latest graphics cards from GPU manufacturers.

The GDDR6 memory has been in works for quite some time and many manufacturers have already started mass production so we can expect to see the memory shipping soon in the latest cards.
Within the research paper, Micron discusses several aspects of the GDDR6 memory which includes silicon changes, channel enhancements, and performance measurements.

While GDDR6 follows an evolutionary path over GDDR5 and GDDR5X memory, there are still some significant changes in the underlying architecture to boost memory bandwidth while saving power.
One detail that caught my eye was the Micron has already determined in performance measuring that their GDDR6 memory could extend beyond the 16.5 Gb/s range.

The result proved that with a slight but helpful bump in I/O voltage, the memory chips can push speeds as high as 20 Gb/s which is a significant jump from the JEDEC defined 14 Gb/s target.

    Gaming 7nm GPU

7nm Vega v2 2018 for Gamers ! with 4xHBM_2 Stacks for Best bandtwidth possible !!! :D (We Love you Lisa )

David Wang, Senior VP at Radeon Technologies Group has confirmed AMD is committed to launching new graphics products every year.

There are no changes to the roadmap. AMD will launch Vega 7nm this year with Navi coming next. Both upcoming architectures will get 7nm treatment.
AMD has not unveiled the codename of ‘next-gen’ architecture based on 7nm+ architecture coming after Navi though.

Lisa Su confirmed 7nm GPUs will enter graphics card market.
This ultimately ends the speculation on what will happen after Vega.

Vega architecture is probably here to stay, for at least another year. The Instinct variant will be available in the second quarter this year.
No word about 7nm Radeon RX availability though.

The way i read that was 7nm Vega Pro release this year. But no mention of when a gaming version will. We can at least be happy that they will make a gaming version for the masses.

AMD showcases Vega 56 Nano (Powercolor) at Computex 2018 Press Event

The exact specifications the card were not revealed at this time but we will update the article as soon as we can confirm.
Considering the past trends with Nano however, we are fairly certain that the specifications will be about the same with a lowered thermal envelop. This means that this will be a vega working on a starved TDP and wattage budget and honestly – that’s where the Vega GPU truly shines (Vega M anyone?).

What is interesting is the fact that instead of showing off a reference edition, they showed off the PowerColor variant which is the AIB we heard about before along with Sapphire.
It is possible that only a select few AIBs will be rolling this particular variant out.

So how this Nano Vega64 stacks up with my Fiji?
It is: ~3xSmaller, ~70% Faster and has 2.5x Better tW !

AMD demos 7nm Vega GPU is sampling right now, launching in 2H18

The new Vega Instinct will be based on the 7nm process which offers 35%more performance since the last generation node (14nm) and has twice the power efficiency meaning it can do that in half the wattage.
Density has also doubled allowing for either drastically smaller die sizes or twice as big GPUs.

The company gave a very short – but working – demo for the 7nm as well, showcasing its rendering capability. This is something that will allow it to make headway into the ray tracing market that NVIDIA CUDA currently occupies. The company also revealed that the card is sampling to parnteres right now and will be officially launching sometime in the second half of 2018.

Considering NVIDIA does not have a 7nm processor right now (Volta is 12nm) this represents one of the few times the company has overtaken its competitor (on paper) as far as roadmap goes and represents a significant leap as far as power and performance efficiency goes – which is pretty improtant for the server and data center market.

Cost and volume were two things that were not mentioned but considering 7nm is the very bleeding edge of fabs right now – yields can’t be all that pretty. In other words, this card is going to be expensive as hell.

You can see the render benchmark demo of the 7nm Vega over here:

Let me start by saying I encourage everyone to do their own calculations. As you know side-by-side comparisons are never accurate, so take this with a grain of salt.

The main question is how big is 7nm Vega package. If the package is the same as 14nm Vega’s, then comparing them is easy. At 4Gamer we found a picture of Lisa Su presenting 7nm EPYC CPU with 7nm Vega in both hands. This gave us the opportunity to measure SP3 package and compare sizes. Since we know SP3 package is 58.5 x 75.4 mm, we can quickly conclude that 7nm Vega package is roughly ~47.8mm on each side. This means the package is likely identical to 14nm Vega (47.5mm). From here we compare pixel density and the rest is simple.

It’s worth reminding you that 14nm Vega dimensions are officially 486 mm2, while measurements from the press gave it a 510-ish mm2 die size. We are going to include this margin of error into our quick calculations and we end up with 285-298 mm2 7nm Vega die size.

That said, 7nm Vega is likely under 300 mm2.

I really like the fact that AMD are bring out 7nm GPU's and CPU's in the same time frame. Good time to retire my 6900k and Rampage Black Edition 10.
