Not sure about this, but I believe the only reference designs for the 8500GT were 256 & 512MB. So I'm thinking this may be a non reference card, and possible not using the ADT7473 fan controller normally used in the 8800 line. Are you getting values in the hardware monitor?

    Car battery?

Yes, that is what I am referring to. Do you see fan speed or fan duty cycle?

    A few more questions.

1 - Are you using driver, low level, or have you tried both?
2 - If you stress the card using something like Furmark, does the fan change once the temps get high?
3 - If you enter the setup for the fan duty in the hardware monitor, what is listed as the data provider?
4 - Are you using any other software that could control the fan?

And how many wires are going to the fan.
