    Hey guys

I just put my 4850hd in last night and was having issues with it overheating. I read that I should install the Asus fan controller to adjust the fan speed and that fixed my overheating problem. I rebooted the computer and now my ethernet port says its "disconnected" and no cable is found. Am I having power issues with my PSU? It seems like when I reseat the video card the ethernet port comes back until I reboot. System specs below, psu is about 2-3 years old.

    AMD 6000+
    Asus M2N-E
    Asus Radeon 4850HD
2 Gigs of G Skill Ram
    Thermaltake 420w psu
    X-fi extreme music sound card

I would say 420watts is a bit on the low side for a HD4850.
Try monitoring the +12v, +5v, +3.3v, and The Cpu Vcore voltage whilst under load, if they are well below the proper voltages then Your psu is not good enough.

You need to upgrade your PSU. Go for a better one. At least 500-600W.

I'm using a Corsair VX450 450watt. Wattage isn't everything, look at what amps it can deliver it's much much more important.

Are you sure it isn't a software problem ? if you disable the Asus program is your Ethernet then up and running ? I'd suggest you update those drivers first before buying a new PSU.

    In this case I disagree

His PSU is 65%+ that means he gets 273W max on that power supply. That's not enough. Your PSU is 82% efficiency at 100% load.

To put this in perspective he would need a 530W power supply to achieve the same wattage as a 420W PSU with your efficiency. Or 570W to achieve as much wattage as your PSU puts out.

ETA: The system in the guru3d review requires 269W under load. However, the X6800 extreme is a 75W processor, the Athlon 6000+ is a 125W processor this puts him well over his PSU's limit.

Sounds like software clash to me.

No, a 500watt PSU will convert 500watt no mater if its 65% or 80+%.
A 500w psu with 65% efficiency will need 675w to do the right job.
    500w at 80% will require 600w.

    Here's a link HERE

Your problem I related with your PSU indeed. I had the same as yours, but I changed it for this Zalman because the Amperage was just insufficient.
A card such as the 4850 will require a lot more amperage than older card.
Since ATX 1.0 to ATX 2.0+, the requirement in term of voltage are somewhat lessened but Amperage are the big factor for a solid build!

Also guys, his is a Thermaltake 430W with only 18 Amps on the +12V rail. The HD 4850 needs at LEAST 26 Amps.

The 4850 do run hot at the moment as many have observed but there is a nice little fix just here, no hardware modding:

So once you have your PSU sorted you may want to goto this link and have a look at Bretware's solution, about 1/2 down the page, works a charm.
