Does this mean no more Intel network cards/chips for PCs?

Just the modems. So it's just their radio division.

It also just covers mobile phones, Intel could (probably no intention of doing so) still make 5G for laptops etc.

This is everything to do with the fight between Apple and Qualcomm. Apple have a multi-year agreement with Qualcomm at the minute but I think it only covers phones. Expect these to arrive in the iPad an later iPhone when the agreement ends.

Seems like an odd decision on Intel's part, seeing as making that hardware is easy money for them. Intel isn't in need of getting $1 billion now, so, I feel like they're losing out in the long run. On the other hand, Intel failed hard when trying to enter the mobile market with their own CPUs, so perhaps they're just giving up entirely on anything mobile related.

Yeah that confused me too lol.

When a technology is chosen as international standard a lot of regulations come into play so I guess the profit margins were not that huge as they want so the short term cash gain is more attractive to stock holders.
I wonder how much of that 1.000 millons the involved employees got...

True, but clearly it was profitable enough that Apple was willing to spend that much money on it. If their patent issues with Qualcomm was the problem, Apple could just simply buy the chips from Intel, rather than actually buy the entire division from Intel.

The way Apple handles things that the last time we hear about Intel modems again. Not like we heard much about them anyway. Intel threw in the mobile phone towel.

Likely Intel did this so it could focus more since AMD is really breathing down their necks lately and it's only going to get worse as EPYC is rolled out.

Apple got a real bargain on this since they essentially got Infineon which was bought by Intel for 1.2B and they got around $400M in patents. Apple I suspect had this planned out even prior to Aprils Qualcomm six year deal was made. At least now Apple can pursue building a 5g modem into there SoC instead of having it as a stand alone chip without having to worry about tons of litigation. Samsung already has the modem built into the SoC so Apple has been at a disadvantage on that front for a while now.
