    Hello to Guru3D,

    I am trying to diagnose if either my PSU or mobo is dying, PCIE lanes.

    If I tries to boot the PC without the PCIE connector, it will not boot. Screen stay black, no bios boot.
    RX480 + 8 pins = partial boot until 3D mode is active.
    RX480 no connector = no boot
    Onboard = pc work fine

    Should the PC boot to Win10 even without power connectors?

    From what you describe here it looks like your psu does not provide enough power for the whole system with the video card installed.

    Have you tried a different power supply? preferably a higher wattage one.

    For a system like that I would imagine something around 800W would be required right?

    What exactly happens at this point?

    Not using the RX 480, no. The card needs more than 75watts to function.

    That RM650 can easily power the OP's system...lol

    That RM650 is capable of outputting up to 648watts on it's single 12V rail.

    Your system draws a lot more power than the OP's does....

    Really?

    I would have thought a 480 draws more power than a 470, plus his system has 16GB of ram and an overclocked i5 whereas I have 8GB and default clocked FX.

    @FNK, do you have a friend that you could borrow a power supply from to test your system?

    He can run it on decent 500W PSU. Power draw of full PC is ~300-350W. without oc (GPU ~150W, CPU-80W, 70-100W Mobo, Ram, fans, HDDs etc)
    If he oc it to max maybe he will hit 400-450W in benchmarks but not it real live scenarios. So RM650 is more that he need.

    1. You need PCI-E cables connected to boot RX480
    2. If PC boot with cables connected but fail in 3D mode, this mean 2 things.
    A. Your GPU is defective.
    B. Your PSU is defective.

    I would barrow from someone new PSU and connect it. IF PC boot You will need new PSU if PC fail to boot i will test it with different GPU with similar TDP to be sure it is 100% GPU.

    Okay thank for the feedback;

    1. GPU us was fine (RMAed a working card) and they sent me a brand new one that they quality tested. Card is not the problem.
    2. Win10 boot the "loading rings", but fail to enter Windows interface. PSU load should be minimal even in 3D aero mode.
    3. I did manage to boot to Windows 1 time after a whole driver clean. But Driver installation failed, Windows froze and had to hard reset.

    Put everything at stock including the ram, and test it with only one stick (1333mhz).

    Yep, that's a good place to start. Also disconnect any excess hard drives, fans and other plug in devices. Just start with the bare minimum.

    This^...The fact that pc runs fine with onboard video sure points at psu/gpu...

    maybe pci-e slot but I doubt it.

    Hey guys,

    As an update;
    I've successfully found an older video card (to rule out compatibility of newer cards) that is also less power hungry, a Geforce 550TI (1x 6pin molex), that run on PCIE gen 2 (Port push 50W vs gen 3 75W if I am not mistaken).

    1. Bios recognized the card,
    2. Windows 10 still did not boot past the loading rings...

    So what can I rule out, or make out of this test?

    Try another OS (i.e. Linux Live-CD or a Win7 install on different partition, 20GB is enough).
    Or try fresh install of W10 Creators Edition ( download from https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 ) without tinkering around with drivers at any point.

    See post #9...start there and not with another video card.
