AMD FreeSync Support Coming To Catalyst Drivers On March 19, 2015

Here is the quote we were given from AMD.

“AMD is very excited that monitors compatible with AMD FreeSync™ technology are now available in select regions in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). We know gamers are excited to bring home an incredibly smooth and tearing-free PC gaming experience powered by AMD Radeon™ GPUs and AMD A-Series APUs. We’re pleased to announce that a compatible AMD Catalyst™ graphics driver to enable AMD FreeSync™ technology for single-GPU configurations will be publicly available on AMD.com starting March 19, 2015. Support for AMD CrossFire™ configurations will be available the following month in April 2015.”

Freesync is something to take into account when purchasing a new monitor but I am not going to get out of the way to go and buy a new monitor while I have a perfectly good one in front of me.

Is AMD seriously stacking high on this? That people will buy their free-sync capable cards tomorrow together with new monitors just because?!

 

Yeah, but it's been awhile since I last tried it (I tried it back when it first came out in beta or something).

It wasn't really worth using on primary machines (I don't think it ever was), but works fine for computers you want to use in a console-like manner. It can be adjusted for use on a primary machine, but there's no compelling reason to do that (last I checked anyway; other desktop-oriented distros play Steam games fine for the most part).

SteamOS isn't really bad or anything, but I don't really see myself using it. Would rather just toss something like Xubuntu on a computer and be able to run and do other things without too much hassle.

Also I'm not too sure if it's different now, but SteamOS used to force proprietary graphics driver use. It depends on the card and the games being played, but there's times where the proprietary driver is worse than the open-source one (nouveau on NVIDIA, radeon on AMD). So that was an initial deal-breaker for me.

 

The R9 cards we both have AMD is giving us a feature that we didn't have before. I am not going to run out and replace my 144hz monitor this minute but freesync/gsync/etr is now a must have for me when I buy my next monitor (whenever that is).

 

I expected it to be optimized for gaming or something like that. My experience with Linux is ancient, when a lot of things had to be done using command lines and it was not fun to install hardware.
