GTX 970 Owners Thread

Am I right in thinking the G1 Gaming is the best 970 on the market? I plan to get one very soon.

 

Well at least thats what I thought based on the launch lineup. Dunno about more recent versions however

 

"The" best depends on what you're searching for. It would've been too loud for me, according to reviews and the fan rpms stated, but it certainly has some headroom in terms of power target.

 

I'm searching for power, cool temps and quality. Noise really doesn't bother me.

My two MSI 970's will run at 8020Mhz memory and 1553Mhz core with +83mv no artifacts and stay around 54-58c during gaming and benchmarks (unigine valley, Heaven and 3Dmark Firestrike)

my other choice would have been the G1 but it was a bit long and the 970's don't need 3 fans imho?
what score and speeds are the G1's getting on air cooling?

 

The MSI does look good from that video, and it's not the size of a boat. Now I'm torn, time to do more research.

EDIT: I'm seeing several people complain about coil whine on the MSI.

Coil whine is luck of the draw.

My G1 is a bad clocker, havent tried overvoltage, but stock volts with 1514mhz is stable with 7658 on the memory. Keep in mind this is not sammy ram, but hynix. It seems MSI stuck to samsung memory chips throughout production, or you guys got lucky.

I think at +50mv 1573mhz is a rock solid stable, but need more research. Also strange but I can only select between 3 voltages, 1.212, 1.237, 1.262. It seems I can't hit the max +87.5mv even though the slider is there. Tried NVInspector and MSI Afterburner.

I'm seeing several people complaining the G1 is a bad memory clocker, I bet they aren't seeing that its actually Hynix Memory and not Samsung, and many use Guru3D's 'base' for OCing.

 

My MSI Gaming has hynix ram.

 

Any 970 can have coil whine, its just about luck.
Just buy it from shop where you are able to return and change it if it have bad whine.

 

Only whine ive had on my msi 970 was a very slight during Valleys menu where it was clocking about 4000 fps,got mine at stable @ 1550 core & 4000Mhz on the mem (110% PL) & it never goes above 60c even at full load

Only issue im seeing atm is an intermittent blank screen on wake from sleep (DVI-DL) that an issue that seems to be effecting all kinds of Nv chipsets at random on various output ports,nothing ive done bios/window drivers/OS re-installs seem to fix it,Doesn't seem to effect ubuntu so im guessing its a driver issue that needs some work.

 

How's the driver situation with the 970? I remember when I got my 680 the drivers were terrible and it took a couple of months before I felt like I was getting proper performance out of my card.

Early models had samsung and newer models have hynix, read this in msi forums as they advised people not to flash custom bios from web as although the card is the same they have used samsung/hynix memory so the timings will be different.

Mine is hynix and easily clocks to 4000mhz

 

I never saw an MSI card with the clocks in that link.
