It's a Russian missile of some sort, guaranteed. Some station picked up a missile launch notice last night. Russians don't want to admit it, of course, since it's most likely a failure (it's spinning, thus it's weird sphere). They've apparently had something like a 50% failure rate with these. Unfortunately I didn't get to see it since I was swamped in work at uni when this happened.
Very weird. Certainly looks like some kind of lensing effect with the atmosphere. The blue could be a focused version of the normal blue of the sky. The spiral could be heated air expanding in one director then spinning due to the lensing. Like there was a big magnifying glass in upper atmosphere. But I just made that up.. so who knows! Reminds me that they still don't know what those bright red lights are that fly up out of the sea on the same day every year in south east Asia. That's very weird too.
