Paul Thurrott reports some good news for desktop users who feel spurned by Windows 8 and aren’t satisfied with the changes made with Windows 8.1: Microsoft is working hard to appease them. T... Full Start menu with Windows 8.2
Too little, much too late. If MS had done "the right thing" they would have listened to end users at the start, not months later while in damage control mode. Congratulations definitely not deserved imo..... Hopefully this whole debacle will have a positive impact when 9 is released......that's one good thing that may come out of it.
I wonder how much does this have to do with leadership changes than being reactionary. All they're doing is returning the Windows 7 start menu and implementing "ModernMix" into the OS. Knowing MS, these options will be hidden and not presented as options on first start/detection of hardware.
I disagree.. This change will likely continue in future iterations of Windows.. Let's face it, even Win 7 will someday be obsolete... Better late then never..
i dont see the problem I'm using Classic start menu, before that i used start8. One app download and you good to go If those apps weren't available, i would stay with WIN7. Now i have 0 problems with Win 8.1 c1:
Not sure what you mean, this is not about the life of an Operating System. It's about a company too arrogant to listen to what it's customers desire and using poor marketing tactics (read: DX 11.2, Tiled Resources) to force upgrades onto users. This is exactly what happened with Longhorn and DX10. Btw u may surprised at just how many systems still run XP.
thank you so much! now thats what I wanted to hear all that time! now tell me when is windows 8.2 will be out and i will go grab me one!
That's a great step forward but the giant leap would be to be able to disable the metro UI and Metro apps.
I'm still on Win 7 myself. I honestly never tried Win 8/8.1 but if it's true 8.2 will be roughly the same as 7 it might pull me over the line.
a little too late but better late than never. it's a good sign that at last the company decided to listen, that's what's important.
There is nothing wrong with 8.1. Yes people should have the option but how many here swore that they would never touch 8/8.1 but when battlefield 4 came out everyone swapped then realised that it's actually not that bad. Apart for the usual teething compatibility issues ive had no problems with 8/8.1.
Some of us also wait atleast a year untill all bugs are fixed. I experienced the same this round but with Haswell from day one. It's cool to have new stuff on day one, but it goes paired with issues you can't be bothered with. Win 8.2 should be pretty much bug free for ppl coming from Win 7.
If you disable screen scaling, it should be fixed. There's also workaround for that @ MS site - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2908279 Regarding Start Menu... I really don't get why people fail to learn to use it. Still, for me it's 7 < 8 < 8.1, so 8.2 will likely to be even better. I also like that windowed option for "Modern UI" apps. It should be there from the beginning.
Put Aero back too, and I'm sure people would turn over to Windows 8.2 in droves! Poor Bigmuscle though with his Aero Glass project lol.
Disable screen scaling doesnt do a thing for me. I know about that hotfix im already using it, and had to add a game in the registry already for it which was not on the list. It is very likely that other games have to be added as well and i rather see microsoft fix it for real instead of offering this.
8.2, our telemetry says you don't play those games. 8.3, fine fine we will integrate the workaround into windows, k? 9, all is magical in 180 land
