Fermi Cards - Powersavings Driver Issue (GTX460 only or all Fermis)

I have an MSI gtx 460 1gb on a new gigabyte p45 mobo that keeps freezing at the windows login screen. reinstalling the drivers a few times fixes it but if the computer freezes again (which isn't hard to do), the problem comes back. is this related?

I've tried:

not overclocking my cpu
4 different sets of drivers
not using audio on the hdmi
reinstalling windows 3x
used two other cards (nvidia 9600gt and ati 4870) both works great

everything is perfectly stable without the drivers. so I think the switching from 2d to 3d clocks is what causing the problems.

videocard also works fine on a P35 system.

 

@ferme, I would rather search for the problem elsewhere. If the freezes were latency based, driver reinstalling wouldn't fix the problem. I would try looking for the newest drivers for all the hardware in your PC at the chipset manufacturers pages - not on the motherboard manufacturers, because they tend to be outdated.

But this is not the thread for this - if you want specific help with your issue I would suggest making a thread in general hardware section of the forum.

 

On X58 same problems too with MSI and Zotac on two diferents mobo (Gigabyte and Asus).

 

driver reinstalling doesn't really fix anything, it just lets me log in to windows 2 out of 10 re-installation. after everything loads, I crash as soon as I do anything that would use the gpu. youtube /w HW acceleration, dvxa on my media player or launching a 3d app.

with a p45 mobo
idle clocks go down to 41/150 (nice temps but crashing)

with a p35 mobo
idle clocks only go down to 400/1800 - perfectly stable, no stutter when opening or closing apps.

Now I have only noticed such stuttering after playing Crysis with my mad overclock, my latency is through the roof. If I restart my computer it is perfectly fine, but it is unbearable until I do. I find the 259.31 driver set is much more stable in regards to the stuttering, but like I said, after Crysis it is still there.

 

No problems for me. Drivers are 258.96

GTX460 ONLY has this Problem...read the thread then u would know it..

100 percent confirmed on my Intel D975XBX2 and on another machine using my newly purchased GTX EVGA 460. . DPC latency is fine without drivers installed, but as soon as i install Nvidia drivers ( tried all of them lol) DPC latency goes to hell, as in red bars.

I'll probably return my card tonight and get a 470 - this is unacceptable , even if it's a new card. You would think they have some testing on boards that arn't x58. Nvidia. you should know better - shame on you.

 

well this is obviously a driver issue then.. i see no reason for returning my card. it is still a huge improvement from my 9800gt.
everything in game is flawless and low power mode is very smooth too. all i notice is some red bars when running the dpc app when in low power mode.
my card has proven that it can run perfectly when in full power 3d mode and im thinking that this low power dpc issue will get fixed with future drivers.

 

If you work with ASIO for editing audio or even editing video, this is a show stopper, period.

Nope. This is just from clicking on the outside of an Aero window and dragging it around the desktop. LOL


And i use Ableton, which as you may guess, does not work very well right now.

 

My DPC latency is way in the red to 8000. Right now I am using the 258.96 driver. For now I don't see many if any problems doing everyday tasks or gaming. When I do install a new driver I will see if DPC stil reports bad drivers. Ill test after uninstall and reinstall of nVidia driver. Ill know at least for me where the problem is laying at.

 

It would surprise me if it's just that, but turn of HPET support if it's enabled in your bios, I tends to add to dpc latency as well.

So i did a little more testing with the same driver installed. I turned off my anti virus and onboard sound didn't fix latency. From what I noticed it seems to be 2d related like most have said. When the card is just in 2d or idle the latency goes way up to 8000. In the 3d mode the latency stays more below 500 but can sometimes spike to high yellow and low red. It seems to be the 2d/3d downclocking issue that most seem to believe it is. Since my latency spikes just a little in 3d it could be that the driver isn't all that good yet. Might need a few more releases till it all gets worked out. It could be possible that something else is causing the latency but so ar everything seems to point at nVidia.

I already have spread spectrum,dot control and intel eist all disabled.

 

If the issue would be on each motherboard chipset, I would think of a driver problem. I think a bios-update will do the trick.
