    Jesus people.

I dont now how many times it needs to be said:

DSR is a software solution from nvidia. It isnt bound by the hardware. It is slower, and of poorer quality.

VSR is hardware based and requires the scaler to support the resolutions. If you dont have the scaler, you aint getting it. period.

if you dont understand the difference, go get educated.

and yes, there absolutely are component changes between 79xx and 280/x..

Now we need a software solution.

that is a far more productive suggestion than the constant whining in here.

I don't care how old it is. It's triple the hardware of modern consoles, and it is still sold as a very well performing middle of the pack card.
A lot of people need to realize that there are a lot of us that can't afford or don't want to invest in 4k hardware at this time. For 1080p gaming the 7970GHz is more than fine.

In Ryse at 1080p, it is 5fps slower than a GTX 970:

The compute hardware on the card is so good, that in compute heavy titles like FarCry4 it is faster than the GTX 780 at higher settings to boot!

As for VSR I love how people say here "It wasn't in the box, why do you expect to have it?"

A lot of things weren't in the box, including Crossfire profiles for example, or DX12 support, and not only for the 7970, but for all cards sold by AMD. Does that mean that we should all get the shaft? Unless I see a reasonable explanation about why we can't even get VSR that people had by themselves regardless of hardware for years, then my next purchase won't be AMD.

I have my card for one and a half year and it was an excellent purchase up to now. There is a reason for not going for a GTX 770, but my problem is that the GTX 770 gets better support apparently, and this is how AMD is losing customers.

Its safe to assume that they won't be doing a software solution for arbitrary rea$ons, right?

that costs R&D money better spent elsewhere.

All new cards moving forward will have it, its a waste of money to backport a software solution.

If you want the feature, buy a new card.

If you choose to move to the green side, you will be buying a new card anyway.

If the difference between "hardware based" and "software based" is that AMD is using an extra post-processing filter for the downsample I can live without it. I only care about the ability to force a higher resolution through the driver like NVIDIA does, thanks.

As for the component differences between the 7970 and the R9 280x, they are mostly non-existant, up to the point that the cards have similar and interchangeable bioses.

My stupid brain can't grasp also how any card that does Supersampling, can't do VSR/DSR.

Even the AMD slides claim that VSR is simulating SSAA for games and engines that don't support it.

NVIDIA, who are the inventors of Supersampling, explain what it is:
    Oh wait.

But the OEMs forgot to put dem good scalerz in the 7000s. :)

(And let's not forget the 5000 and 6000 series people. The GTX 460 is getting DSR... )

I would prefer to be told bluntly that AMD won't support older hardware because they can't afford to do so, or because they want us to get newer one. It is fair in the end.

Instead, the most important thing I get out of this, is that by their unwillingness to implement a feature that is there since time immemorial they show what's gonna happen support-wise to older cards once their newer series is out. Hardware that works splendidly in 1080p I might add.

If they could only unlock what their driver was doing anyway and have a dude work on it for an afternoon...

What I said was about my next card, I intend to hold my current one until it's not enough for 1080p gaming.

The newest drivers are fine for my 7970. You should be fine too.

Here it works fine (Windows 8.1.1 x64). I had to press "Install" on a Windows popup about driver trust during installation though.
