"" AMD Radeon HD 6790 will use a graphics circuit called Barts LE and as we implied in our initial article on the new card the similarities with the more powerful Radeon HD 6800 series are quite striking.

Barts LE uses AMD's classic VLIW5 architecture and will get 10 SM units (Streaming Multiprocessor) with access to a total of 800 stream processors. This can be compared to 12 SM units and 960 stream processors in Radeon HD 6850 that is based on Barts Pro.

Radeon HD 6790 has beside fewer processing units the same bus width at 256-bit and relatively powerful clock frequencies. The GPU operates at 840 MHz while the memory shuffles data at 1050 MHz (4200 MHz effectively). All to put NVIDIA's newcomer GeForce GTX 550 Ti in its place and offer a more powerful alternative to Radeon HD 5770, at a lower price than Radeon HD 6850. ""

I was wondering when AMD would enter the 6xxx series into the 150USD market.

A very interesting product, I can't say I'm a fan of the 6790 branding though. 6770 would have made more sense.

The only real reason I can see for the name 6790 is just to make the card look like a far more powerful 6970 to unsuspecting customers. A quick skim read of performance charts including the 6970 could show the card performing incredably well, a less clued up member of the community could walk into a computer store one day and see the 6790 (easily mistaken) on a shelf at a bargain tastic price thinking wow, I saw one of these the other day and it rocked. Buys it and bang mistaken ID net's AMD a sale. Far out I know but if anybody can come up with a better reason do tell.

The reason this card is branded as 6790 is because 6770 and 6750 are already used as a rebranded OEM 5770 and 5750. I would have thought that 6830 would have been a better name for this card since it is a cut down Barts.
Branding aside, this card should perform quite favorably compared to the 5770. 6870 was able to outperform 5850 despite fewer SM units. With the same 800 SPs, I won't be surprised if the 6790 performance is closer to 6850 than to 5770.

Oh yeah without doubt the 6790 will perform closer to the 6850 than the 5770.

The 6870 does outperform the 5850 but does just fall short against the 5870

The HD6790 if priced correctly by AMD will be a hell of a card.
Hell, at stock, performance shouldn't be too far from the HD6850, specially when you look at the juicy memory bandwith (134.5GB/s).

They say it is here to compete with the GTX550Ti but I can almost bet it will beat the crap out of it.

    should be around ( maybe a bit faster don't know ) of a 460 1gb ( reference design )

so yes i don't think the card will get so much trouble against the 550TI..

Now all depend the price cause it will be under the mid class Bart GPU's.. ( but largely faster of the 5770 too, and they have sell well )
