AMD Fury X Owners' Thread

So I have a good deal on a fury x, atm I have a rx480 4g. Is it worth the change or just save the money, the fury is less the 50

 

Let it pass. Your 480 overclocked is almost as fast. Wait for some good deal on Vega56/64.

 

Vega or wait for Navi price drops/promo.
If Vega then best is to have: Sapphire Nitro+ or XTX

 

I wonder how would have Fury X been today vs other cards if AMD didn't block HBM overclock back then. Pathetic move i would only expect from green team, next time is green team unless they can do something on par and from the beginning, not 1 year later.
Fury X is the very exception to "FineWine", some games it was a beast but most it had performance on par with a 480... atleast at 1080p where i am playing now.

 

So the Fury X scores 18k in firestrike while my RX580 scores 17k. Im telling you these Polaris cards are just as fast today and they ware not on launch.

 

HBM clock lock was sad. But we could still tune timings.

As for 480 which is no match... 580 has clock advantage. If you understand what's inside those GPUs then you know what that clock advantage does for Polaris.
As for Fury X. Go look at initial driver benchmarks. And compare them to today's. You'll be surprised how much it improved.

 

My 480 Bios modded and with a accelero 4 does around 16k close to 17k 1450mhz cant do more something makes the card go off, I think it trips a security function somewere.

in superposition I can do in medium almost 9k.

Now I have the card stock bios because when I mod it I lose the DP ports dont know the reason.

 

Yes it improved a lot i know but the reason i moved to Vega was that in most games Fury was pretty much comparable to a 480 which is sad.

 

Both Fury and Vega are very robust. But certain parts were not doubled in comparison to 2048SP HD 7970. Performance of those parts could scale up only with clock as result.
And good 35% advantage in those parts of image creation was enough to catch up to brute force of 4096SP.

 

I am ignorant but from what i'm seeing Vega has potential to be finewine. It had slowly catchup with 1080 and in some titles it touches 1080ti or even pass it (especially LC edition).
Let's see what happens when Navi are out. If they gimp Vega like they did with Fury next time is green team.

 

Thing is that AMD never officially supported OC of HBM1. It has been enabled by editing limit in vBIOS and then 3rd party tools could manipulate clock.

Taking it away was unpleasant but they did not take away something they gave to us in 1st place.

If I understand it correctly Vega has HBM clock control in Watman and therefore AMD taking it away would be pretty unfair.
As for Vega FineWine (tm)... Raja failed to deliver most of Vega's gaming improvement.
Where you may see some real advantage over time is that while Fury has 1:1 FP16:FP32 ratio, Vega has 2:1, therefore double FP16.
That's massive compute capability which 5700 XT can't match. If AMD ever decides to accelerate something in driver via FP16, Vega is going to shine.

 

Fury X is nowhere to be found but Fury Pro is still there, used going around 200$. Decent performer but rx580 can be found for less or Vega56 for a little more. Not worth it.

Yep, still rocking the Fury - it's a good card if you already have one but not worth it to pick one up used imo - I'm waiting to see what Navi brings (or generation after).

You still have your Fury card? Nice. I saw one Fury X for a 150$ but the guy said the pump is on its way out. Again, looking at the score thats on pair with 580 and lack of vram i dont think card is worth it.

 

I wish my card was as tweakable Instead mine is incredibly sensitive to any changes and easily becomes unstable :'(

Eh, shame man becouse a Fury card at 1200mhz would be a beast. Well, you cant win everytime. I have friend with a 580 that cant reach even 1400mhz while mine is 1500mhz stable. Hopefuly your next card will be overclockable.

 

I believe my card is one of those that can take a lot of extra voltage and overclock with sufficient cooling, I can overclock it to upto 1150mhz with upto +100mv for extreme benches but it runs very toasty and even general overclocking it gets very hot so I just avoid it.

When trying to go the other route though for cool and quiet efficiency, undervolting, limiting power etc, even just a 10mv undervolt on it's P7 state will cause it to crash.

And then when it came to editing memory, it really hated it, tried the tmod for example - stutter fest/green artifacts etc.

But yeah just as you say, can't win everytime, not like that 285 I had that could reach 1200mhz no sweat. I found it rather amusing though with the 285, you might remember me breaking the 10k graphics score in Firestrike with the balls to the wall overclock on it, well, not long ago, I did a benchmark on the card in my old system with a Q6600 with crimson drivers, the 285, at 1050 mhz broke 10k graphics score. Really goes to show how much improvement AMD has made with drivers since catalyst!

I should do a new benchmark with my Fury at stock to see how it compares with my first benchmark run on my Fury... See if there's any changes due to drivers maturing.

Edit:

Done a fresh benchmark, graphics score sees a significant uplift (with GPU at stock settings) compared to the first benchmark I run on the card back in 2016
