    I have this WiFi adaptor - https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/adapter/tl-wdn4800/

It says "provide wireless speeds of up to 450Mbps" but when I do a speedtest I'm only seeing ~180Mbps -

    My net is 350/35.

The connection signal is 'Excellent' with the router only being in the next room.

Is there a reason for such a drop in speed?

Have you configured the router, like disabling unneeded features?

Does your router support 5 GHz IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n?

Have you asked your internet provider? I mean maybe they know from discussions with other clients.

PS I see that adapter you linked supports only IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n. If you live in building packed with neighbours with IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n routers and devices then it can be that you all interfere with each other.

The more antennas the more theoretical speed.

    I have this one
    https://www.asus.com/Networking/PCEAC68/
    [IMG]

In my eyes the adapters with external - on the wire - antennas are a bit better - you can orient the antenna to get a better signal.

often routers default to 40mhz bandwidth mode for wireless N, try setting it manually to 80mhz and see if it makes a difference.

Just bought one of those "PCEAC68" myself. Hopefully, it'll do the job.

I can't seem to find the drivers anywhere though to pre-download before installing it.

There's nothing on the Drivers & Tools tab here - https://www.asus.com/uk/Networking/PCEAC68/HelpDesk/

Also there is driver in Windows 10 Update Catalog - a bit newer - but strange enough it can`t work in MSI mode so I reverted back to 2143 one.

40 MHz 802.11n setup is good, that way bonding mode kicks in at 300 Mbps, however (and I am not 100% sure) as far as I understand some 802.11n gear cannot support channel bonding as that wireless signaling is government-regulated in certain countries like the UK.

If you're not too far away from the router, really the 5 GHz band AC or AX would do heaps of wonders for you, it's just that range is shorter. But within 5~10m you're fine.

Driver I linked is "DriverVer=10/17/2016, 7.35.351.0" from Broadcom and so far it is rock solid/stable on all Windows 10 versions.

    PS
And driver installed from Windows Update Catalog was "DriverVer=02/10/2020, 7.77.113.0".

Like we've spoken about before, you turn off Fast startup, don't hibernate or S3 and fully shut down when not using the machine, the issues manifest as a result of uptime and have been touched on by multiple users

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/47kw5a/psa_solution_to_asus_pceac68_being_buggy_on/

I'll try the newer driver though.

Hmm, Tplink users are reporting hang on boot with the new driver.

You can install full package (with utility) or just drivers (through Device Manager).

that 7.77.113.0 seems to have been pulled from the windows catalog and stationdrivers no longer has it either.

    found 7.77.119.0 though.

This is what archive file with 7.77.119.0 drivers contains
    [IMG]

And this is what UT_PCE_AC68_2143.zip file contains in drivers subfolders
    [IMG]

Who knows what these two additional dll-files do... But I prefer full package.

The additional files are from a broadcom utility that was never shipped with the W10 asus drivers, the utility was for OS's that didn't natively have wlan support in the tray to select an AP such as XP or used the legacy 802.11 IHV Extensibility functions and IHV UI Extensions

They are included as a packaging mistake iirc,

NDIS 6.3 drivers use WDI instead, so they don't need the extra's.

MSI driver support seems to be excluded because of the addition of Beamforming, which was not-functional in 7.3x (incomplete specification)
