We have heard nothing but press releases and fake demos being shown for the past 2 years. Sony and their new ‘cell’ processor, the new killer cpu, and this time they joined forces with NVIDIA to help them deliver the next generation visuals that seems to sell the most video games these days. But, at this time, E3 is here and they finally told us some concrete information, and everyone wants to know: is the PS3 worth all the hype?

I remember reading back in like December 05 that Sony representatives were still telling people that the PS3 was still on track for a spring release even though they still had blue-ray issues and no one has even seen a game being played on it yet. Even Larry Probst of EA said it probably won’t be available till the fall of 2006. Then, the only evidence available at the time was some demos that ran so slow that they recorded them and then sped up the frame rates post-production. But it still showed promise. I mean it is Sony after all and they wouldn’t invest so much money into something that just wasn’t good would they? Also, with that in mind, I wonder how much all this is going to cost?

Well, as far as pricing goes, we heard in April* that the PS3 might debut at 499-599 Euro or about 636 – 784US. Of course Sony stepped in and said that was wrong and that there was some sort of miscommunication or something. But whew… 784 bucks to play this great machine that I haven’t seen anyone play yet? I hope this isn’t true as I don’t own an Xbox or Playstation console of any generation. I like playing games on both and at this point prefer the 360 due to the fact I can actually play some games right now. We’ll see what happens when E3 gets here.

Speaking of the devil, E3 is actually here and there is a load of juicy news about this PS3. Number one, the screenshots and such that have been released are incredible and look just as superficially dazzling as the xbox360. Now for the good news, that boomerang shaped controller that they initially tried to show the public is scrapped in favor of the dual shock 2 controller. This controller also has some new hardware that suspiciously looks like Nintendo’s technology.* Now for the pricing…. $600 for the full setup with a 60 GB hard drive, and $500 for a neutered setup and a 20 GB hard drive. And for the final bit of news, it will launch on November 16, 2006. As pessimistic as I am about initial launch dates for anything video game related, experience tells me that a large percentage of specific dates get pushed back. Yes, I understand they mentioned spring launches but ‘spring’ isn’t a specific date. Hence, such estimated launch dates are disregarded for this point.

But wow man, you want us to fork over 600 dollars to play this thing? All the Japanese gamers that snubbed their noses at the new Xbox for Sony’s next best thing, this is what they waited for? Well I’m not really sure how it will do with such a price point, but I do know one thing. Microsoft is definitely not going to drop their Xbox360 prices anytime soon. Actually, maybe this is beneficial to both companies; they both get to keep the initial prices high. Oh well, its not like gas prices have gone up in the US, and thank god for the far eastern markets.

Well the positives here is that the PS3 will actually have a decent controller. It will have all the features Sony said it would and that it’s finally here, or at least here in a near future sense. I just hope that between now and then a few more killer apps surface to justify such a steep purchase price. I’m also not the only one with doubts on the ‘launch’*

Xbox 360 and PS3 will have nothing on PC when DX 10 and Vista comes out. u see that game that look like farcry 2, well it was running at DX 9 and it look better then the ps3 and xbox 360 games, with DX 10 it will rape the gfx off of the ps3 and xbox 360, this is true. 60+ for a game or 70+ pff plus ps3 and xbox 360 cant match up that PC owned them at PORN Which 98% of the internet use and then there mods and patch not only speakers and sound cards and gfx cards all u can upgrade from. xbox 360 512 of ram is not going to help and same as ps3. Quake 4 Ran like hell on xbox 360 because of the 512 of ram. ps3 just copy off from nintendo.

I agree that the memory is not going to help this consoles be on top of PC, Oblivion is a great example on how textures and such was dumbed down because of the memory being to low to handle it. There's only 4 games I saw that looked promising for the PS3 (which was showed in more detail, other trailers was to short and didn't tell much about the game itself) , Heavenly Sword (I think it looks like a very fun game), Resistance, FFXIII and MGS4. Will I buy a PS3, or an Xbox360? .. don't think so... not till I buy a vista/DX10 rig first. Saving my money for that instead.

Stupid Sony. They show off all those pre-rendered scenes that look amazing and make the little kiddies excited. Then when they show ya the games it's nothing special....bah. I hear the online component it a bit of a mystery to developers too. Didn't Epic say that they've got nothing from Sony for their online component? Not good!

And what's with the pad too? Way to nick Nintendo's ideas! Just because the most original idea phony ever had was a webcam. And there's even acute differences in the specs between the two console packages too. Nightmare!

Sony have an uphill struggle on their hands.

 

What a load of crap... Those PS3 screens look like something my old 6800GT could beat... And that price tag.... Sony just shot themselves in the leg. The Xbox360 will own this PS3, since it seems to have more graphics power (which is the only relevant aspect of these new consoles since they just can't seem to offer anything new in terms of games...). Microsoft looks like a winner...

BTW did I mention that those screens look horrible for a "next-gen" console (pile of crap is more like it)...?

 

I don't really understand what's this all about. The games are looking nice (only saw screenshots of UT2007 and Heavenly Sword (?)). What's the big disappointment? I mean, I saw COD2 on X360 and it's really nothing special either...

Edit: Ok, seen'em all. Warhaws looks sweet and Fall of Man looks as good as the best PC FPS, if not better.

 

the ps3 and 360 have yet to cum into thier own yet . games will look better when the've been out for abit and programmers get threr heads around the technology . but i do agree that the pc will surpass the next generation consoles because you can keep upgading pcs as where you cant with consoles

the top pc games at the moment look just as good as any console game out , and crysis and other games just look stunning

ign.com says fear looks better on pc than the 360 version , and fears been out nearly a year , so its all good for us pc gamers

IGN's article on FEAR for the 360 said that currently the game is not at its best, that by release it will use all of the PC's textures with the equivalent of everything at its best if using a pc, at 30-60 frames. Remember, Condemned used an updated version of the Jupiter Engine, the same one that powered FEAR. They could make the game look better on the 360 than the PC if they wanted to.

 

Look at the pre-rendered videos sony initially released, they are what people based their expectations on because Sony presented them as though they were the actual graphics to expect in games. That's why it's dissapointing.

 

PC did't show its true power yet. if u think MGS 4 look crazy on ps3, wait for DX 10 and Vista. Pc will have the faster loading times, Pc will always have on top, the best gfx cards when consoles stick with one. The PS3 is a 7800 GTX Card on Crack lol and Xbox 360 is a ATI 1900 XT so those cards only have Support for PS 3.0. pff it dont have DX 10 since DX 10 is still in beta and the cards for dx 10 is not even made yet. look at Unreal 3 engine, it only use DX 9and look at the gfx on that. DX 10 is next gen not ps3 or xbox 360. Hell Fear for xbox 360 is going to run crap since it need 1gb to run it.

You know why pc games suck because The person who make games are lazy and when it comes to console they give it 110% when on pc 50%. UBISoft show that pc can do it if u do it right. Splinter cell 3 was one game that look NEXT GEN.

Save your money and wait for Windows Vista and DDR 3 and Dx 10 Cards.

The PC fanboyism in this thread is absolutely hilarious. Though considering the type of forum this is, it's to be expected. As for hype.. I personally didn't buy into any of it. Does that mean I wont get the console? Not in the least. Does a pretty game mean it's a good one? Hardly =\

I think a lot of this "told you so" attitude is quite pointless toward the vast majority of people. Luckily, most of the gamers I play with and know aren't running around dry humping whatever game looks nice. Gameplay > Looks.

In the end it comes down to what type of games you prefer to play. Microsoft can stick Vista up there back ends for all I care. Though.. I've stated in the past that the majority of games I "enjoy" on the PC are from a few years ago. I'm not going to fork out a grand + to play perhaps one or two future games. Good luck to those that do, I hope you enjoy yourselves.

lol@ you. i see your mad cuz u have a wack computer. pc always and still beat console. console will always lack of something that pc will always have.
Blue ray no problem, pc will get them soon, HD dvd no problem we will get them. a fast computer chip, no problem we will get something more powerfull then the ps3 cell chip. same goes to gfx card and sound card. ps3 can do that and xbox 360, pc will do better.
