Today I found out that my chipset fan had suddenly stopped. It still looks fine, and after I gave it a little push it started running again, but at a lower speed.
It used to run at about 8000 rpm, but now it only manages to get to 5000.

So I'm just wondering if this will have any bad consequences for my performance or durability of my system.

I think your Northbridge could overheat... I would call Asus and ask if you can send a money order or something and they send you a new fan, it's not that hard to put on.

Apparently, this is a common fault on A8N-Sli!!

Don't send them any ££, RMA the bugger!!!

This is a common problem for all A8N's, SLI or not. Some fans just stop, others make extremely high pitched whining noises.

Mines been good so far, so im just gonna keep hopeing.

As for what to do, It wont make any preformance difference, unless youve got a relitivly high OC going on.

If it stops working altogether, RMA it.

ASUS is offering free replacement for old design chipset fan.
Mail their tech support and ask for the replacement.

Either that or just buy a passive zalman sink for the northbridge, no chance of noise or anything breaking if its passive....

Don't get the replacement from Asus, it's no better than the crappy one.

    Just buy yourself another one.

Yeah I think I'll do that. Passive means no annoying sounds, plus it's not expensive anyway.

I also have my chipset fan making noise and am in the process of getting it replaced. What are some of the signs that my motherboard is damaged due to the fan not working properly, besides the obvious melted board and not being able to boot up?

Do you know if they'll send a replacement to Australia? Because my chipset fan was making a really bad noise, I got that to stop but now its running at 5000rpm.

    [edit]
How would I get one of these replacements?

I think you should be able to get replacement anywhere in the world.
    I got mine in India.
All i needed was copy of original invoice and the store took care of it.
But alternatively you can contact Asus Australia by mail or phone and if asked give them your setial no and invoice copy in mail. And they send a free replacement which dont have problems of the older version.
Why you want a passive one when you can get a free replacement and that too improved version and not the same one.
