This is known for extremely long time. AMD is paying to GloFo money every year for manufacturing of APU if they take them or not. They have made update to deal that they will take more goods (more money for GloFo) but this now includes GPUs. Did anyone think AMD is dumb or what?
I dont think 14nm FinFet will be ready for high performance (HP) processors on the end of 2015.. 20nm > 16nm Finfet.. or maybe they are able to go quickler to 16nm than with TSMC..
While Nvidia is stuck at 28nm next year, AMD will be on 20nm? The next year after that when Nvidia starts production on 16nmFinFET, AMD with the help of Samsung will start production on the 14nm process?
To me it seemed when reading bit more that only one going to 16nm FinFet is tsmc and rest straight to 14nm FinFet, tho since the naming conventions are weird and I ain't even close to being clear on those I ain't sure. 16nm is like 28nm and 20nm a Stopgap half-node, but like I know anything First chips with 14nm FinFet should ship starting 2015 so I guess we will see high performing chips early 2016 maybe. But surely some 20nm parts will come out to fill the void. We will see.
GF has missed their deadlines many times and seems to perpetually be in last place so unless samsung is bailing them out dont put too much faith in em.
Nvidia stuck at 28nm next year? Where did you read that "nonsense"? Nvidia is going to use TSMC's 16nm FinFET and therefore will probably skip 20nm. TSMC talked to the Dutch ASML for manufacturing equipment. It's expected that the first chips arrive somewhere mid 2015. ps: yes, I did make an account for this post
Ah who knows what's what anymore. so much is being said . But till i see one high performance 14 nm finfet on a AMD or Nvidia then it should all be taken with a grain of salt. Global F. Does not have a very good track record!
TSMC has already begun "risk production" on their new 16FF+ (Plus) process which is 40% faster and uses 50% less power than the 20nm SoC process while at the same speed. They expect 16FF+ production to ramp up to "volume production" by July, 2015. TSMC states that the regular 16FF node is geared more towards performance chips like GPU's, while the 16FF+ will dramatically cut power usage. Did you really have to post it here instead of proper TSMC nVidia thread one click away? And that statement: "process which is 40% faster and uses 50% less power than the 20nm SoC process while at the same speed." Is absolutely wrong and misleading. It either allows for 40% higher clocks or consumes 50% less power at certain clocks in comparison to previous process. What you wrote says that at 1/2 of power consumption it performs 40% better. That would give 80% higher performance at same TDP. And since Maxwell 980 is 175W, then your 16FF magic would give at 250W TDP around 2.5x higher performance than GTX 980.
