1440p 144HZ OR 4K 60HZ for my new GTX 1080?

So I've had the GTX 680 and a 1080p 60hz monitor for the past 4-odd years now and this Christmas I felt the need to upgrade. Most newer games are barely hitting 60fps and I cant crank up all the settings to max like I used to be able to do. I have a chunk of extra spending money ($1200 for a gpu/monitor) for the holiday season so I was wondering whether to go for a 1440p 144hz monitor or a 4k 60hz monitor? While the majority of gamers are leaning towards 1440p since its the "sweet spot" for gaming, I also like to watch a lot of movies and TV shows in HD so would the 1440p distort the image? I hear 4K will be the next big thing as far as viewing pleasure will go since movies will soon start being able to be viewed in UHD, aka 4K. Also will watching 1080p will be more enjoyable and look less "strange" on a 4k monitor since its only x4 the pixels and not the niche resolution that 1440p offers, which might make 1080p look weird? At this point I am really confused as to what to get. I'm purchasing the EVGA SC 1080 sometime next week but as far as monitors go I'm stumped beyond belief. I'm looking to future proof so another 4-5 year spam I have in mind as far as these purchases go if that helps you make my decision.

TLDR: 4K for viewing pleasure and better game/movie quality, or 1440p 144hz for solid uninterrupted frame rates on a "niche" resolution that might make 1080p movies look distorted?
Is 1440p being distorted a myth @1080p or should I really just wait for a ~$600 4K 120+hz?

1440p 144hz. I'd wait to get a 4K monitor for a few years when you can actually make use of it at decent framerates.
I've never encountered any irregularities watching a 1080p video on mine either. Just make sure you get a decent one.

 

for gaming take 1440@144hz.

 

Depends on your budget and needs:

Gaming only - 1440p @ 144 hz
Gaming AND Movies - 4K @ 60hz or better but be ready to sell blood and etc...

 

Tbh I'd get 4k @ 60Hz.

 

I personally prefer the 2k 144Hz monitor. Refresh rate is more important to me. 4k isn't well powered even by the best graphic cards yet. 4k for me when 4k 120hz comes at a decent price and a card that can make around 100 fps

 

For gaming I prefer 144hz monitor is best BUT if you want to enjoy movies as well then you can go for 4k monitor. Most of 4k monitors carry hefty price-tag

 

Games wont handle 4k.... youll get 30fps and lower.

Your desktop will be 4k,,, but for games ,, play @ 1920x1200 60hz vsync on ,, if your monitor latency is low,,,,

I went the tv route years ago when people were paying silly money for 30'' pc monitors. I just dont get it.

4k is so nice, yes it will eat some fps, but then you can have ultra still and no need for mssa and hbo whatever you call it - the beuaty is you can still adjust ressy to 1440p if you need more fps :banana:

i was getting 45 - 50 with my cards , its easy to get well over 30fps

 

agree with above except i use both. 55" samsung UHD in game mode for 60Hz gaming in non-ultracompetetive games like fantasy, mmo, some sports titles, sp shooters, open world crime games, etc. For CSGO, Rainbow six siege, nba2k/fifa17, battlefield, etc i use my Dell S2716DG which is 1ms response time, 1440p, g-sync, 144-165MHz, ULMB, 27". Best of both worlds. The dell is only aroun $500, great buy!

 

I myself do wish I had got a bigger 4k tv as I think 40'' @ 4k is the minimal size to get!

In hindsight I would have got at least a 47 monitor

Another vote for 1440p @ 144hz here.

 

If it has to be a choice between the 2 I'd say 144hz. Your 1080 isn't going to manage 4k60 with most games, whereas the gsync monitor is very flexible.

That said for Movies and TV 4K HDR is the way to go. So it's a matter of which is more important to you.

 

1440p 144hz without a doubt. I recently made the switch from 60hz and the difference for me was black and white, similar to the switch to an SSD drive from mechanical.

I play a lot of games like CS:GO, BF4, Overwatch, Killing Floor 2, Rainbow Six Siege, The Division, Dirt 3, Far Cry Series and older titles like Bioshock and the good CODs.

With a GTX 1070, I get 100+ FPS in all but the UPlay games where I get high 80s and 90s (still considerably more than 60fps). In Witcher 3, the cities bend my CPU over... but outside the cities my FPS ranges from 60 to high 80s.

I own a 1080p 144hz monitor and let me tell you the difference is outrageous compared to 60hz. I wouldn't consider switching to a 4K 60hz for gaming, not at this time, even if I could maintain the same FPS as I did. 60hz is a huge bottleneck for rigs that can get beyond 60FPS. People at 60hz claim to notice a difference when playing a game at beyond 60fps, with 144hz... be prepared to see said difference.

Everything is butter smooth and they make competitive FPS games way WAY more fun to play, not to mention the edge they give you. At higher level CS:GO games, im talking Rank G on ESEA (if you make it), you're not competitive without a 144hz monitor.

1080 is not near powerful enough for good FPS in 4k, unless you like running settings much lower.

Plus the fact that 60hz looks terrible.

 

That's a little extreme. 60hz looks fine, above it just looks better.
