Just wondering if I can upgrade from a Vista OEM Home Edition 64 Bit installed from Dell with out any troubles. TO THIS (Windows 7 Home Edition 64-Bit OEM Version) 99.99 from the EGG. Dell has always been Proprietary when it comes to there OS,s tied to thier Motherboards. Its a Dell XPS 9000. Any Problems???? Bought the XPS Dell about 5 years ago for the Other Half and still a good Rig. Just won't Boot into OS anymore and want to upgrade. Help appreciated. Thanks. Later
There is nothing "proprietary" about the OS. All OEM pre-installs are tied to the system. Technically, there is nothing stopping you from install Win7 OEM on your Dell, keep in mind that you're required to purchase a piece of hardware with the OEM copy of Windows. If you plan to use the "upgrade" option at Install, you'll need a regular, retail copy or an Upgrade disc.
When you say purchase a piece of hardware???? Ordered the Dell about 5 years ago and came pre-installed with Vista Home Addition 64 Bit OS. My worry is that won't be able to load it, (Win 7), because can't even reload my Dell supplied copy thats installed on it now to repair it. Also shows (BOOTMGR) missing but can't get far enough into it as to a repair or replace. Help Appreciated. Thanks Later
You can't just simply purchase an OEM copy of Windows by itself. OEM copies of Windows are required to be sold with accompanying hardware. Barring any technical issues with the system (faulty controller, faulty harddrive, etc), it is possible to install Windows7 on a Dell that came with Vista.

That's a "system builder" copy. It's sales terms are similar to the retail copy, but the support terms are similar to the OEM copy.
Which brings me back to my Original question. Can I use either one that has OEM Vista installed, Or do I have to play the Upgrade side of things. Thanks. Later
If you want to "upgrade", you'll have to buy a retail or upgrade disc. OEM (including system builder) can only do clean installs. So, depends on how you want to try it.

If the system was bootable, I'd say just get the upgrade disc. However, since you say the system is currently unbootable, I'd probably opt for the retail disc personally. The upgrade disc can be used for a clean install (if necessary), but it takes a bit of extra work.

Thanks, I'll give it a read. Damm Dell computers. If had my choice would buy a cheap good Mother Board and replace it, But I.O. case connections would be a problem. Probably get the Upgrade version Once you open the Box pretty well locked into it. Problem here is time restaints as to up and running.:bang: Thanks.
