evolution of singleplayer fps games imo: wolf3d doom quake unreal STALKER crysis/warhead the definite milestone being Doom and Unreal.
Well the Godfather would have to be Wolfenstein imo, but if I had to choose one shooter overall... Half Life, I love you.
Marathon on the Mac, one of my all time favourite games. It was so far ahead of everything else; guns that had to be reloaded, a proper storyline, low gravity, intelligent puzzles, awesome multiplayer. It even came with all the tools needed to create your own physics, weapons, enemies, sounds, and levels. You could even make 4D rooms, where one room could occupy the same space as another, great fun when all you had to rely on was your motion sensor. Also, for anyone who has played it, the suicide exploding BOBs, "Thank God... it's you!" BOOM!
Half Life, played it as a kid. That game was real man. When I finished it I felt like a 'Nam vet. I couldn't really talk about the game to anyone... you weren't there man, you don't know!
I'm kind of partial to the "maze" screen saver on windows 95...but that's just me. Nothing like replacing the wall textures with t*tt*es. lol j/k
that's because i've played Wolf3D more than breathing air, the game just never gets old even now and don't forget the secrets and hidden doors that you hunt in the game to discover treasures and so on, it's a game that sets the benchmark for every other shooter (at least for me). but my 2nd pick is definitely FARCRY. my top 5 fps of all time 1) Wolf3D 2) Far Cry 3) Alien vs Predator 4) Call Of Duty 1 5) Half Life 2 about HALF LIFE 1, i thought the first half was amazing, but the 2nd half (planet) was absolute $hite, infact i've never finished HL1 since i got it back in 1998 or so. i completed HL2 many times though, a couple of levels got a tiny bit boring but they were over pretty quick so no big deal, the game simply oozed of quality thanks in part to the source engine part of it.
i finished crysis twice, and i couldnt beat farcry 1, how ****ing boring it was uke2: maybe crysis its not pure FPS, and with the nanosuit giving it a little "RTS" feeling... made a difference? good for me and bad for fps purists?, maybe, but for me crysis series have been funnier that many FPS's like fc1, cod2...
Wolf3D is the obvious originator but Quake and Half-Life were the Godfathers of the true 3D generation. Half-Life is my all time favourite FPS though, it was just so real in a manner of speaking.
Wolfenstein Doom SystemShock 1 Quake 1 + 2 Duke Nukem 3D these are the best if you go back to the early varieties of FPS.
LOL tell me, which game has better cinematic presentation than CRYSIS? i mean FPS? And it is M.S. mostly about VISUALS. its today standard for our systems lol. EDIT: oh and i forgot to add that people sitll HATE CRYSIS like it raped their systems. its hard to swallow once u build a system and raped by CRYSIS lol. i STILL CANT forget the whining panks on gamespot forums about they r trying crysis on their laptops systems.
