I have an Asus Rampage Xtreme III with an i7 920 CPU on at the moment.
I am looking to upgrade such CPU to something like a 980X - 990x or even one from the server line of CPUs. Can this MB support an Intel Xeon X5690 CPU with non-ECC memory ? or should I stick with 980X.
I should also mention that I plan on having 6x8GB DDR3 Hyper X Fury installed on all DIMMs and what to know if the Xeon can support these in case I should head down the Xeon path.
    Thank you.

Why specifically the X5690? higher multiplier? from looking around the web( google x5660 Asus Rampage Xtreme III - theres more results for the 5660 as thats the one commonly used in old x58 platforms ) your mobo supports these Xeons, not sure about the X5690 but i dont see why not.

I havnt seen many use the X5690 as it still expensive relative to the X5650/60/70 cpus, but you should be fine using non-ECC memory as thats what im using on my X5650 and theres no issue.

The 980X is on the same nm process as those Xeons, pricing and availability is why people arent using it as the Xeons are selling for next to nothing. The 980X would be a slightly better chip but not worth it. You can pick up X5650's for $70-80 on ebay, $80-$100 for the X5660 and a X5670 for $100-120.
Thats where i got my X5650, i didnt know if it would even work with my mobo as its not listed as compatible but i had no issues, in hindsight i probably would have gotten a 60 or 70 with the higher multiplier which means less of a strain on the system for larger overclocks.

Not sure if you will have issues with the amount of ram, it should be ok, but check here as others have large ram configs with x5660s http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1820772

Thank you for an insightful reply. Much appreciated! I spoted an x5690 on ebay.uk since i'm from europe and I will pull the trigger in this direction then. Again thank you so much for a quick and helpful reply. I knew I can rely on good ole G3D forums as always.

no problem at all, let us know how it goes( im interested in how a 5690 will overclock :) )

Im in Europe too and got the 5650 from the US on ebay( ok, exchange rate isint so good now ).

Welcome to the club...soon...lol, great family of processors for the aging x58 platform, fantastic upgrade over a 920, youll notice a huge difference in SLI performance( even better with DX12 soon )

    I am using a x5670, with a 25x multiplyer. I am running it at 4.2 with a bclk of 168. Runs cool & fast as hell.My x5670 was only $100 on Amazon.

Wonder how to get 25x stable.
In my mobo I have to turn c-states on to get 25x but that is so unstable for me.

    Mind giving your settings?
Also when I turn c-states on I get some extra options I have no idea what they mean/do.

    Atm I have 22-24x 179 bclk.

I guess it is luck of the draw.Certain boards allow for certain multis, from what I have read. In order to get 25 multi, I have to turn turbo on. I leave c-states off. I have no issue using a 24x multi, too. 25 just allows for a lower bclk. I can bump it up to 4.4, but the temps are too high using a h50. I have a h100i back from rma I plan to use to keep the temps in check.
    I have vcore at 1.28v.
