I had this issue and fixed it. It's SecureRom. CD Projekt did use Sony's SecureRom, a benign version of it, but it still uses paul.dll. That's the culprit.

Delete Paul.dll. Use the GoG.com's DRM free witcher2.exe. You may see a performance boost also. Makes you wonder what else paul.dll is doing for Sony with that kind of overhead performance. Very shady.

What's wrong with you? Asder already answered your question. If you're desperate just play it in window mode until the fix is released, until they all you can do is wait. Screaming on this forum won't change that.

Lol, REDEngine and yet, it runs like crap on ATI/AMD cards. Oh, the irony.

Haha, I wasn't the only one that was thinking how ironic. But TBH, considering I'm using a laptop, playing Witcher 2 @ 720p with high preset, the game looks fine and plays well enough. I'm using a 1080p high contrast, wide gamut LCD here, and it still looks great. 1080p would be nicer though.

The attention to detail on this game is fantastic. CDP didn't skimp on anything it seems. The textures have some bump mapping, they aren't flat like DA2 and Crysis 2 are. The armor and weapons are all excellent looking, unlike the crap from BioWare, especially the armor in DAO, the low res textures. ME2 just looks shameful in comparison. The colors are very vibrant. The trees, bushes, everything looks lush. The lighting and the sun shafts in this game are probably the best I've seen in a game so far. It's nice to see that Days and nights passing here, instead of DA2 where you just click for night or day quests. The bloom/HDR isn't overblown like they are in almost every game I've played. This is the first game I'm playing with HDR/Bloom on, every other game it's the first thing I turn off, even in BC2, the bloom is ****. Other than the performance issue, visually this is the best I've seen. It's not the technically best, but artistically it's awesome and it fits the game well.

True CD Project came up short in their QC and testing to ensure their game functioned with all aspect ratios and with the chips from AMD/Nvidia. But I'm happy enough even if no performance boost is gotten considering the game itself is leagues better than any other RPG/Action RPG I've played in a long time. And looks to me this game will have plenty of mods in the future too, so some replay value yet to be seen. Free DLCs and hints of expansion pacts. And considering, I don't think we'll be seeing an expansion at the prices BioWare (I still think BioWare is just a brand name, nothing more, it's just farking EA) charges. This is pretty good so far.

Ditto on the GOG exe, running good enough to actually play for a while but still, that AMD hotfix would be nice.

Having played through the whole prologue I would like to say that it does not run that bad with Dirt2 profile and AFR (RP) tbh. My mid-end system is capable of giving me 35-60fps depending on the situation which is okay (1920x1200 Ultra, no über, Vsync on).

I wonder does anybody know if the Witcher 2 engine supports Athlon XP processors(SSE protocol)?

You're kidding right? The minimum requirements for this game are 8800 for GPU or quivalent (3870) and a dual core/quad core CPU. You probably won't be able to run Witcher 2 at anything satisfactory. Secondly, SSE is so old. It's not a Athlon XP feature, it's featured on EVERY CPU since like 2000. Every game since then has supported it. Only Nvidia continues to use x87 cause they are dicks.

The last game that I bought with securom was GTA 4 + EFLC I think. It sucks that if I use a NOCD, it runs better too.

That's it. No more securerom games for me. My money goes to whoever sells the game with no DRM. Waiting to finish Witcher 1 EE then will buy Witcher 2 off GOG or Steam if it does away with securom.

I don't have any problems running it. I'm using the 10.11 beta driver, because it seems to be the only driver that doesn't have the mouse lag in the corner on 6 series cards.

Steam has the paul.dll and SecurRom. Steam claims it's DRM free, but they are liars. It's still there. It's not the full blown SecureRom, but it's enough where you may see some performance issues. Plus if you buy from GoG, more of that money will go to the developer's hands rather than Valve's Gabe Newell's fat ass.

I think the use of DRM is decided by the publisher, not steam.

Look in "Steam\steamapps\common\the witcher 2\bin", I have the Steam version and the paul.dll file is sitting in there, havn't tried replacing it for a fps boost yet though, the games already smoother than I expected for my 5650 mobility scared I'll jinx something by expecting more.

not every game uses all the securom features (like mid game triggers), so not all games would have a performance hit

    is cdprojekt aware?

almost 3yrs ago there was a crack 'war' where there were arguments about fully cracking securom vs emulating pieces of it to bypass it just enough to run the game

so there would be competing cracks, 1 would have as much securom code removed as possible at say 10mb filesize, 70mb ram usage / another would have securom emulated at say 45mb filesize, 110mb ram usage, but there was never a clear difference in performance while in game

This is ironic because you do realize Steam is DRM. Newell is probably the biggest hypocrite among those who have spoken about DRM in gaming. He acts as if he's a crusader against DRM, gets rid of DRM by introducing his own. I've bought games on Steam, I understand the convenience of using Steam. But Witcher 2 is like many games on Steam, it's DRM redundant. Steam + Securerom, yeah that's awesome.

Discussion of DRM is endless and at the end it's ineffective and pointless. There hasn't been any game so far that has had a successful DRM. But with this discussion relating to Witcher 2, it's being shown that paul.dll is the culprit, which is securerom. This I think brings into question, how many other games are affected like this? This we don't know since cracked games still have paul.dll running and there are very few if any other game that was released concurrently with both DRM and DRM free version like Witcher 2.

I'm very curious about what paul.dll does to cause stuttering and performance decreases.
