AMD has implemented a new technology in the upcoming AMD bulldozer architecture called Core-Link.

The purpose of this new technology is to allow a single threaded application to be executed on other cores. The idea surfaced on the internet a few years ago, and it was something AMD looked at with keen eyes.

Current processor designs have shifted towards multi-core. Nevertheless single thread performance remains very important as many applications have limited thread-level parallelism. As a result, users executing one of these applications experience little benefit from new multi-core processors.

Researchers from AMD now present "Core-Link" which is a novel hardware approach to leverage multiple cores in order to improve single-thread performance on multi-core processors. This technology focuses on different speculative techniques to automatically partition single thread applications to be processed on multiple cores.

A new unit called “Inter-Core Memory Coherency Module” (ICMC) has been integrated into the die of the upcoming Bulldozer processors. The ICMC updates the memory state in program order, detects memory violations and implements check-pointing and recovery mechanisms, so that it can execute the resulting partitioned applications on multiple cores.

Benchmarks running 12 SpecFP and 12 SpecInt benchmarks of the SPEC2006 suite show dramatic average performance improvements of 81% to 93% (depending on core size) over non-"Core-Link" optimized systems.

Sounds good, if they can get it to work as they claim, and that is a big if.

"core-link amd" at google shows this post, and the link at amd you gave is 404. Region blocked?

anyway, sounds good if they do something like that, but i would like to know where from the internet this idea came.

edit: completly forgot about the date, haaaam.

Can that technology be implemented via software too? It would be great if so, even if it performs slower.

An April Fool's joke, go figure. Guess we'll have to still wait for Reverse Hyper Threading.
