Yeah, once a few years nvidia are releasing gfx cards which allows users to skip next generation or two. This was the case with geforce 4ti, then geforce 6600GT and recently 8800GT. The last one is so good you could skip 9-series and GT2xx series, but Fermi looks tempting (that's why I cancelled my plans to go for Ati 5 series - I will wait to see what's up with fermi). Besides take a look at gpu-z - it will show you the 8800 have pretty high bandwidth (and all) - thats what behind its good performance i think.
Not exactly. The 9800GTX+ and 250 got a die-shrink to 55nm. The 8800GTS 512mb is more like the 9800GTX. But there's not a big difference between the lot of them, to be honest. Nvidia's renaming scheme for the win.
I have a 8800GT running at 760/1900/999 watercooled. It's a hell of a card. I think I might volt mod it, since it's 2 year warranty has just expired.
I still have my asus 8800gt but it's not being used. I already have a spare gaming rig with a HD4850 so I really don't need the 8800gt but I can't bring myself to sell it. my favorite nvidia cards I've owned: ti 4200 - (used in my first gaming rig build back in 2002. It was this card & original Call of Duty game that got me hooked on computer gaming) 6600gt & 6800gt - (had to upgrade from a 6600 to a 6800 when BF2 game came out so I could play it on high settings, lol) 8800gt & 8800gtx - (both legendary) gtx 260 - (already a legend imo)
I think it's the case because most games nowadays are ported from consoles to the PC, therefore, there aren't a lot of graphical enhancements going on. I still have a Geforce 8800gs (extremely OCed, mind you) and it's still performing well on most newer games. So I guess it will be this way until a new generation of consoles comes out. It's my opinion of course.
Well, I would say the same about the 9600GT card as it does rock. It is as fast as an 8800GT card in most things but draws less power produces less heat!
The 8800 series cards fron Nvidia deserve to be in the HoF....heck the 8800GTX ruled for what....2 years...that is unheard of
I rocked my Galaxy 8800GT(voltage OC jumper and Superpipe cooler) until about 3 months ago when I gave it up to my bro who loves it (had 8600gt). My 285 rocks Its PNY but I only paid 279! should have gotten 2) and I got a Galaxy gt240 512mb with hdmi sound chip for my media PC to my 52" bravia and 25in hdmi monitor
