Hi! I have this issue that my above mentioned GPU wont work on top slot with PCIe GEN4 or AUTO mode, with GEN 3 it works. First time when i install the GPU to this slot system boots to dekstop but after 6 seconds or so screen goes black, restarts and does not post anymore. One thing to note that booting in safe mode the 4.0 works on the top slot. Swapping the gpu to slot 2 -> booting -> swapping back to slot 1 makes the above mentioned happen again. Boots to windows -> screen black -> restarts -> does not post Bottom slot works with GEN 4 and AUTO but i suspect this is due to the fact that its is PCIe_x16 @ 4lanes? Could this be PSU/cable issue. My XFX 550w is around 7 years old. Some things i have tried to fix this. Flashing bios the the latest Updating chipset drivers Reseting CMOS Reinstalled windows Purged my GPU drivers and reinstalled those Any ideas?
PSU is definitely a suspect. Does it reboot if you try to play a game with the GPU in slot 2? If playing a game doesn't cause a reboot, it's probably not the PSU.
Played RDR2 while card was in slot 2 and GEN4. Worked ok. I was thinking that because the slot 2 runs @ 4 lanes instead of 16 the power consumption is lower?
Does PCIe v4 increase power consumption of GPU comparing to PCIe v3? @KALAMIES Have you tried to play with GPU in top slot in v3 mode?
This is my next step today when i get home from work. Fingers crossed. It should draw more power but im not 100% on this one
PCIe - is only interface between CPU and GPU. When PC is booting there is no big power draw for GPU. So I doubt PSU is the source. But faulty implementation of PCIe can be. (Or badly fitted CPU Or bent CPU pins.)
Ok, thank you for clarification. The Ryzen 3600 setup was built by me around 3 years ago. I just switched 1060 -> 3060 yesterday. One weird thing i forgot to mention was that when i did the initial installation of the RTX 3060 i did not first remove the 1060 drivers. PC booted fine -> windows found the RTX card -> installed new GPU drivers with "clean install" options from nvidia installer. During the install GPU fans went to 100% and did not calm down even after installation was done. I proceeded to boot my computer, thats where it all started. After this i ran DDU in safe mode and purged drivers and installed again, no effect. EDIT: @mbk1969 I got home and ran furmark fullhd benchmark with 8X MSAA. GPU was stable with around 90-95% power TDP drawn and temps around 68c. Seems solid? Need to play some rdr 2 later.
Yup, might tinker around with the GEN4 thing more but seems solid. Thank you all for your replies and help! Could not found solved button if there is one but i'm all good now
You can add "[solved]" to the thread`s title. But you had not solved problematic behaviour with PCIe v4. You just solved your mind (a bit)... Upd.: And since NV 1060 is PCIe v3 compatible you don`t know whether this slot worked in PCIe v4 mode from beginning.
I'd try to get it working. It should work and while average FPS wont be much worse, frametime consistency and 1% lows are significantly different gen3 vs gen4. Gen4 gives a better gaming experience.
That is true. At his point i'm out of ideas how to fix this. The thing that is bugging me is that the comp first booted to winds in AUTO mode and 1060 old drivers. Then started acting up when correct card drivers were installed (newest nvidia game ready drivers)
