25% slower and 25% cheaper. Contrary to what some would suggest, this does not add up. Bigger dies are disproportionately more expensive because you're basically paying for scarcity and less yield per wafer (regardless of whether all usable dies are in perfect condition). If the 4080 were 25% smaller, that would suggest the price is too high, but it's actually more than 25% smaller. Add to the fact it's not the flagship, and it really gets you to wonder why it's priced the way it is.

So, I think it's pretty definitive that this GPU is priced wrong.

100% agree, prices have sky rocketed, quality of the products has been so so, especially from certain brands, scalpers everywhere... I remember when the 7970 came out... I could just buy it, crazy right! back then a top of the line card AIO cost me £500, I do miss you my xfx double fan 7970 you did me well for a long time.

Price per transistor scales down less and less with each shrink. If you want increased performance, this is the reality we're living in. Nvidia has tried to hang back on older nodes to help keep prices down, but it could only realistically do that for so long with AMD finally starting to catch up on perf/watt.

I just believe people will have no choice than getting used to everything costing more and more, or companies will have to lower expectations.
Ressource scarcity and increasing energy prices are just at their beginning.

Natural Oil is running dry, forcing us to transition to insanely harder and more expensive to extract tight oil, copper mining is running dry.. all ressource are running dry.
Pretty sure we'll have some global collapse before 2040.

I already picked up a 3090ti a few months ago. I'm good til the 50 series.. But, they need to get their crap together and stop this graphic card BS! They need to put more cards out for people like they used to. Overwhelm the scalpers so they can't scalp!

Scales down is one thing and plummeting off a cliff over a single generation is another. A typical 10-15% price increase turned to 70%. That is pure greed plain and simple.

They effectively jumped 2.5 nodes. Add inflation into the mix and this is where we are.

Too expensive for what it offers, people are better shelling out the price difference and getting a 4090.

This card should be price between 600 and 800€.

The good news is that the next year, this card is going to the be the "new" 5070 and cost half of what they are asking now.

3090 to 4090 the price increase is 6,6%
3080 to 4080 the price increase is 70%

Cumulative inflation over the past 2 years is 15%. Far far cry from justifying such a price hike.

  14. I wish there was custom MSI/ASUS PCB with 2x8PIN.

And btw... these are cherry picked tests. 4090 is literally a 50% faster chip.

I'd love to see a "benchmarks show the next gen graphics card is actually affordable!"

Then there will be a lot of RMAs, and probably a class-action...

I use a SFF build so always curious.
So far not many SFX PSU's out there that can handle the 4090.
So I'd be interested in a lesser option.

Can always up later on, if things change.

all those shaders and other units in the 4090 are probably a bit starved for memory bandwidth, even with that 96MB L2 cache, so the 4080 punches above its weight. It's similar to how the 12GB 3080 was often super close to the 3080 Ti - the latter's extra units were starved for memory bandwidth.
Oh and of course, the 4090 still tends to get CPU-limited, even at 4K in some cases

I can afford it and may buy the 4090 but crap. Nowhere has them in stock. Same crap as 2 years ago. I'll wait a year and see what stock there is. My 3080 OC ain't no slouch.
