Samsung 8N cost ~4K while TSMC 5nm cost ~17K per wafer according to 2020 data (probably cost even more now)
AD104 chip could cost 2x as much as GA102 to make (4080 12GB probably cost the same to make as 3080Ti)

What this means is it's hard to beat Ampere price to performance, but ADA can excel in term of efficiency (285W 4080 > 350W 3080Ti)

Realistically if your going to buy a 4000 series, you also need add atx 3.0 power supply to the shopping list too. Nvidia just need own it instead trying make it sound doable with 8pin to 12pin adaptors.

Not really. Thermaltake has allegedly released theirs, although I don't see it in stock anywhere. In any case, with so little on the market it should be rather hard to get one's hands on a proper ATX 3.0 PSU in the next couple of months. I wonder what will be less available, ATX 3.0 PSUs or Nvidia video cards due to Nvidia's articial scarcity tactics. I'm guessing Nvidia thought it would be the PSUs, thus they packaged those potentially dangerous adapter cables with it, so people can use their current PSUs until they can get or even afford a new one...

Yeah, im not really keen on using an adapter that might catch fire, if it's bent in a sharper than 3 cm curve...

    that's just a 19% reduction with a node that's 5x as expensive.

Some more measuring done... there is 3 cm of clearing between the side mounted fans and my current 3090 strix... they haven't given exact dimensions for the 4090 strix yet (really annoying), but going by these 2 pics (and assuming that pcie bracket is 12 cm), the 4090 strix should be 1 cm wider than the 3090 strix... which would still be ok :D

Yeah, i just read that... so it will be available in denmark next year... question is, do i dare use the adapter till then... (bonus info - i live in the bottom of an appartment building - the appartment right above me burned down 4 years ago, and the apartment above that burned down a year ago xD)

Make sure they are a tight snug fit and there is air flowing past the connectors.
They wont pose any problem then.

Dont make a habit of disconnecting the wired connectors from each other.

And don't have a bend any tighter than 3 cm for a 90 degree angle... aka 6 cm for a 180 degree turn... which is just stupid.

And then it will still be a potential fire hazard.

That the people at nvidia who decided to push this through, eventhough there are no atx 3.0 psu's on the market till december at the earliest, are just f*cking retarded. Just give us a gpu with 4x pcie 8 pin connectors, and no hazzle...

If anything, I'll get a 4090, although I don't feel the need to buy one with my current 3090 being plenty for 1440p gaming.

Even the 3090 is stupid for 99.5% of games if you are actually playing at your native 1440p. I am sure you have enough sense to use DSR though. I have only ONE game I play at native res and that of course is Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing. Everything else I play at 4k or 5k.

I really did not want to get a 450 watt 4090 but the 4080 16gb is freaking 1200 bucks which makes the 4090 look like the better deal for sure. The 4080 16gb should have been 900 and the 4080 12gb should have been the 4070 for around 600.

I will wait to see what AMD has to offer first as that may make prices adjust a bit and that will give me time to look at reviews closer too to see which AIB I go with. AMD is not an option for me since their drivers are garbage with Quest 2 VR gaming.

Weighing up whether to get a desktop or wait for a laptop 40xx. I usually travel for 1-2 months a year which means I need the laptop or I’m using the Switch only. I think I’ll wait to see some benchmarks before deciding.

Same here. Seems like I just got the 3080's for 3 rigs not that long ago, and about month ago put a 3070Ti in a back up rig. They all do what I need them to do, and I really don't see much of a different with RT on with some of the games I play with these old eyes of mine. Peeps keep saying the 4000's series card are going to sell great. What I have been reading it doesn't seem so. Why I think this? A lot of peeps just got the 3000's, peeps that will buy the high end/cost gpu's are such a small percentage, no miners this time around, used card market, power supply issues, and inflation (these card do cost a lot). Been with green most my life, and since evga is gone (have tried others but was never happy with their CS, or hardware), will watch AMD this time around.
