Hey gang. It's been a long long time since i've been on here. Probably just as long since i've looked at PC stuff. If i had to hazard a guess - im pretty sure my PC is about 4 years old - 2018ish. I7-8700K Gigabyte Z370XP-SLI Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 850w Currently a Gigabyte RTX 2080 8gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200mhz 16gb ram 1440p/144hz 32" LG monitor on a bit of a whim, i jumped at an ASUS TUF 6800 XT 16GB Gaming OC as it was reduced to $999 AUD. I checked that i could power it - assuming my TP 850w with 2x PCIE is enough. a couple of concerns i have, I think the PCiE is Gen3 16x. I didn't even know PCiE Gen 4 was a thing - am i going to be disadvantaged? Is 16gb ram enough for gaming these days, or should i look to double it or more? I7-8700K - any concerns gaming on this now, or should i be looking for a 4y+ newer guts in the PC? I'm hoping just the GPU upgrade will see me through a few more years before another big bang upgrade 2024-2025ish. Otherwise i was thinking I7-11700K or 5700x What's the driver suite like these days? I havent had AMD since my HD 5850. How's FSR and Ray Tracing coming along compared to RTX and DLSS? Keen for feedback. I've been out of the loop for a long time
Gen 4 only becomes necessary at 4x lanes, at 16 3.0 is sufficient, and really only horizon demonstrated a loss at 8x 3.0.
no entry level i5 are nearly 25% faster these days powering a high refresh rate display will be a problem with an 8700k for some games, but it'll do okay for most. quite unimpressive don't get your hopes up, your former 2080 was better at running rt overall. fsr2 is still mostly community mods that need work.
your board can take a 9900k/kf so why waste it, look for used ones, get a nice b-die ddr4 kit and that'll be enough. it's not urgent imo if you have a 8700k and a 3200 c16 kit, but I wouldn't change that z370.
Tough sell. About $500 for second hand 9900's on ebay. I could sort a 5800x for the same price, and then tab on $200 for a motherboard (AUD). I was understanding that you would see CPU differences more clearly at 1080p then at 1440p. Is that the case?
Yeah probably the most sound advice. Just that subliminal voice in the head that's constantly wondering if i'd be getting full use of the investment haha.
Yes, the lower the resolution, the more the CPU is struggling to feed the GPU. However, when the resolution goes up, the GPU starts to limit the fps more. This is also why some sites love to include 720p in reviews, even though most gamers obviously wouldn't use such an outdated resolution. But it can exaggerate the differences under artificial circumstances. And maybe some competitive players requiring 600 fps for their insect eyes really use it. If the old system works for you with the new graphics card, I wouldn't be in an awful hurry to upgrade immediately. A new CPU generation is coming out this autumn, so at least wait until then to check the offerings from both AMD and Intel. If it was only a 4/8 system, then I'd say upgrade as soon as possible.
I would not be buying high end gpu right now same goes for the cpu. We are on the verge of new generation.
The card i brought had a $900 saving on it... Quite clearly GPU manufacturers are starting to run out old stock before dropping the new chipsets. EG no more 3080 12gb models being created I didn't want to run the risk of missing out on this deal and being done by inflation prices on the new gpu's.
I know what you mean. Nvidia charging more for 40 series + probably some scalping in first few months. Some of us wont be able to get the new cards at the release.
Am I outta touch? I see nothing wrong with having an 8700K (6C/12T) CPU with a high end GPU like the the 6800XT. Sure, framerate won't match a newer 8C/16TCPU but it'd have sufficient grunt for more than good enough framerate at, say 1440P where more stress is placed on the GPU.

Looking at the 12600 benchmarks and reviews, the 10 cores/16 threads - it seems like a really nice unit for the cost, plus the extra bandwidth speeds of the PCiE m.2 and some higher capacity ram might make it all worth the jump.

I have a 6800xt since release and its an amazing card. Mine is running on water. On benqmarks Last time I did a timespy was 22k+ for the gpu Its a really good card, dont forget to DDU before you put the 6800xt in.
