    Okay this one is a really strange issue I got and no idea if it's hardware of software issue or what is going on at all. So it all started with me changing my case to an Antec P7 from an old Antec. Started using my external SSD 860evo 512gb M2 on the front USBs and noticed it would fail to transfer files almost every time and I didn't have such issue with the old case, checked the back USBs and all works perfectly. So naturally got Be Quiet Pure Base 600 and now one of the front two USB doesn't even recognize the SSD. And now the confusing part, my external HDD and flash drives work perfectly with the USBs. My thought were 1. not enough power but how could SSD consume more than a mechanical drive? (im using the same cables for them by the way) 2. Driver issue, I've reinstalled them multiple times with no luck.
    Might be the header of the mobo but there is no visible damage at all and all pins are standing. My motherboard is Asus Z97A. PSU is Corsair RM550x

    It just makes the sound of on and off usb and it constantly refreshes the SSD
    And here is my 2TB external 2.5 HDD which works perfectly on this port

    The SSD on the 2nd front USB port. Again both using the same cable (tested with others too) and the SSD works perfectly on the rear ports

    Also when I think about it, with old old Antec case this port worked but sometimes I experienced random disconnects but were extremely rare but never had this SSD not recognized.

    Looks like second front port is connected to ASMEDIA USB controller... Or external SDD has ASMEDIA controller inside...

    Update: Find port # 2 and paste here its details.

    Yes the controller of the 860 evo is Asmedia. About port 2 I don't seem to have it in a sense I don't have it physically. It should 21 ports in total but I don't have that many. Is that some USB 2.0 on the motherboard? I don't understand these stuff that much.
    Here is all I get on port 2
    [Port2]
    Is Port User Connectable: yes
    Is Port Debug Capable: no
    Companion Port Number: 17

    USB 2.0: yes
    USB 3.0: no

    Also port 15 has General Failure, again no port 15 physically and I don't know if it's related

    These front ports are usually poorly shielded, poorly grounded and the voltage loss on the cable is significant.

    I suspect that the power level can be crucial not for the storage device behind the USB interface, but for USB interface itself. You can test it by obtaining another external USB case for drive.

    Yes on the old case the USB cable is thicker and even the front audio had grounding wire which I don't seem to find on the newer cases even from reputable brands, but still what are my options here?

    Also you can try USB cable with additional head for power

    Also note the difference between HDD case:
    Code:
    ===>Configuration Descriptor<===
    bLength: 0x09
    bDescriptorType: 0x02
    wTotalLength: 0x0079 -> Validated
    bNumInterfaces: 0x01
    bConfigurationValue: 0x01
    iConfiguration: 0x00
    bmAttributes: 0x80 -> Bus Powered
    MaxPower: 0x70 = 896 mA

    and SSD case
    Code:
    ===>Configuration Descriptor<===
    bLength: 0x09
    bDescriptorType: 0x02
    wTotalLength: 0x0079 -> Validated
    bNumInterfaces: 0x01
    bConfigurationValue: 0x01
    iConfiguration: 0x00
    bmAttributes: 0xC0 -> Self Powered
    MaxPower: 0x00 = 0 mA

    I mean yeah I can make it work one way or another (was thinking about USB 3.0 header as a PCI extension card) it just puzzles me how from the same USB 3.0 header on the mobo one port recognizes my drive and the second doesn't the system starts connect and disconnect in constantly.

    Thanks, this is good to know. I had no idea of such differences.

    Maybe something is wrong with USB interface in SSD case. Or maybe it has configurable something (like jumpers or special software).

    I don't know, all I know is that it works with the usb ports in my old case and with the two new ones it doesn't and I doubt I was lucky enough to get coincidentally two faulty front USBs on two different cases. I see only one difference but I don't know how it could be related because of the "compatibility" thing. My motherboard is Z97A which is USB 3.0 and my old case had USB 3.0 front port. However these new ones have the flat thin cable which on the site of Be Quiet says my case has USB 3.2 gen 1, the old case had round thick cable + USB2 header. Could it be some weird compatibility issue? Tested my Samsung Galaxy phone and works perfectly with both front USBs and transfers everything nice and fast. The SSD straight up refuse to work with one of the front ports and the second one fails during transfer but at least recognizes it.
