Dear God the USB consortium are the worst.

I get it, you need to update the standard over time but damn it. Just commit to a major update and make all aspects of it mandatory. Stop the confusion! Now I can buy a device and cable and I don't know if either supports video (1080p to 10k?), audio (stereo to 64 channel surround), charging/power (20/40/100/240w), pcie (thunderbolt), or data transfer (480mbps to 5gbps).

To say that the USB type C implementation is a mess is a massive understatement.

I was already wondering how you can push such current through a thin usb cable, but if the voltage can jump closer to 50V, from the regular USB 5V, it makes sense.

there is no way a usb cable could be qualified to carry 240w without becoming as unwieldy as the 8pin pcie aux cables.

i wonder why they don't think about fixing the damn incompatibilities between usb 2 and 3 /3.1 instead

How on earth can a tiny cable carry 240W?
Currently you can fast charge 20V and 5A for 100W.
More than 5A on a thin cable would melt it, so I guess voltage is going up?
    We'd need 48V to hit 240W at 5A.
    This is getting dangerous maybe?

really bad idea, why would some one want to run hypothetical 100w external device let alone 240w from the pc. is even chargable mobile device that use 100w to charge? i mean if if the exsitance i would never charge them to pc usb port.

and even if it was for charger, i would question it

I guess there are too many PCs working fine, sales of new parts are slowing.
A new way of accidentally on purpose killing your PC or starting a fire is needed.
Great way to plan ahead, kudos!

I can already smell a fire hazard when cheap chinese fakes from Aliexpress: "USB-C-240W-cable-top-quallity-original-ultra-stong-power-high-wattage-amperage" flood the market. Way too many people I know left their phones charging over night while they're sleeping, it's just a matter of time when someone I know would burn the room, house or at least firniture with this cheap fake cables. Guess we could expect "USB cable burned my house" headlines to become more often than ever before...

Honestly not sure this is good idea at all, 240W through such a tiny cable is disaster waiting to happen. Who the hell's gonna needs so much power running through such a tiny USB-C connector/cable!? I can understand 100W, even 120W through such cable but 240W?! Some idiot would make a portable USB-C electric barbecue and sell it on Aliexpress, Bangood and eBay  And no way they could control QC and cable certification for all those chinese cable factories. Can't wait to show this to my dad, as an electrical engineer he would be shocked at least

So NDA is not saint fo you, ha!?

Its ok, if your house doesnt burn down, it can be returned.
If it does burn down you wont need the cable any more, problem solved.

Those "22 gauge wires" with 30 gauge conductors and 22 gauge insulation are all the rage.

bingo! less resistance (= less heat)
plus the cables will only be for short lengths to lessen inductance
there will be a capacitor somewhere inline to keep USB values

why would anyone need that if battery size hit the absolute limit and 100w charging is already almost instantaneuous
and im sure this is not safe either, unless they want me to charge it through the 12-pin that comes with nvidia founders edition cards
