Nice. I can already see them. One 3060 Super for 1000 euros.
Miners and scalpers will be super pleased with this launch.

If people are smart, then they will wait for 4000 series... unless you desperately need a new gpu right now.

Always a horrible deal buying a gpu mid-late cycle.

I already share this story on another thread, but I share it again, because it's a bit relevant here.

A couple of days ago, my MB stopped working. So I had to buy another.
Went to a store to buy one, started talking to the guy in charge. I look that a corner and there's a bunch of RTX 3080.
I inquire about them, and the guy just says those boxes are empty. But we got plenty of them in the warehouse. It's 1500 euros, each.
And the look of disappointment, when he realized that I was a gamer and not a miner....

There are a lot of GPUs out there, but most stores, importers and warehouses, are holding them back, so they can charge huge premiums.

  12. If it's made by Samsung, I'm not interested. Their manufacturing node sucks.

    it's not the node it's g6x
ampere on g6 is as efficient as rdna2.maybe slightly more.compare 6700xt vs 3070.
    [IMG] [IMG]

g6x is both extremely power hungry and hard to cool down.

    a g103 die with 85% of 3080 performance,16G G6 non-x at 250W would be an instant hit.even 10g g6.

cool story bro, could you tell it a third time?

usually held back for custom builds etc, than individual sales.

sticking with a monolithic die for 4xxx could provide AMD with the opening they need if they are smart, not greedy.

AMD is continuing to cut its cost of production
by investing in next gen manufacturing processes to the point that Intel will be outsourcing production for many consumer lines and parts (like modems and ethernet controllers) including lower end cpus.
MCM is a continuing part of that and Nvidia just doesn't have technology to scale.

so if AMD can hold off from flashier quarterlies for a year they can lower prices (or have a MSRP that sticks) while increasing output from the same number of wafers.
they have greater efficiency and greater yield already, when they add more wafers to a longer production run economies of scale kicks in.
if Nvidia was in the same place as AMD technologically (other than uArch) Nvidia would raise, not lower prices.
but since Nvidia dominates this market i expect AMD to play this much differently than CPU. i expect them to leverage every advantage to gain market share.

The span until the next gen GPUs is way too long, they will be way too expensive, and there's nothing we can do about it.

I'd agree with your analysis, but I fear in practice mining will remain a problem that will still totally mess up the whole GPU market. If it does, AMD won't be able to do anything about the prices, and thus won't be able to try to gain market share that way (because the AIB partners and stores won't lower prices). If the MCM cards are mining monsters, it will be all the more out of AMD's hands. If the new fabs only start running in 2023, they won't help for a long time.

Nothing would make me happier than being proven wrong, naturally.
