I've heard Pluto is cold enough, miners should try to move there...or just ban the whole thing and call it a day.

Exactly, might even solve several issues that follow the trail of unregulated virtual currencies.

Amen. They don't want to go to proper work, instead want to do nothing and get paid.

I agree, but they have to find a replacement that unlike USD or other bank related currencies, does not care about sanctions and some stupid politics and laws. Welp good luck to that!

You've got to love the fact they chose to use the amount of water we boil in England for Tea as a metric for energy use.

    say residents
if we were paying attention what locals say, you wouldn't have a single industry size operation on this planet

a quick calculation says that this particular mining operation can raise the temperature of its allotted water volume by 0.5 Celsius - at maximum

    8000 BTC miners
1500 W (highest power miner available)
    Total power = 12,000,000 W
being cooled with 500,000,000 L per day
and assuming that nothing but water takes away the heat produced(unrealistically worst case scenario).
    500,000,000 L / 24h
    water intake flow = 5787 L/second = 5,787,000 g/s

    Delta temp = Energy/water flow
    12,000,000 W / 5,787,000 g/s = 2.07 J/g*s

You need 4.16 Joules to raise the temperature of 1 g of water for 1 Celsius. Meaning this mining operation is increasing their allotted water volume of 500 million liters for 2.07/4.16 = 0.5 Celsius

    Lake Seneca water volume = 15.9 km3 = 16 000 000 000 m3 = 16 000 000 000 000 L
divide that volume with 500,000,000 Liters allotted per day = 32,000

Meaning that left on its own it takes 32,000 day = 87 years to raise Seneca Lake temperature for 0.5 Celsius.

This allotted water volume being 32,000 smaller than the lake volume, it's amazing how residents are able not only to feel this increase but discern it from the surrounding things like weather, Sun and heat waves

So that's what happened to Venus and Mars, now the miners moved to Earth.

I wonder if the floods will raise those shallow mass graves who died from coronavirus like it did in India? Or maybe float off the cooling trucks with bodies waiting to be buried?

Just epic what bitcoin mining can do...

Wow, how many people are feeling hurt about bitcoin, I wonder why?
Is it because of the graphics cards? o_O

I will stir up a few nests here...
@cryohellinc What else would be good to ban Globally? I don't think there is a single thing in the world that is outlawed globally. I am wrong actually, going outside for a walk just very recently.
@Undying I think it's a crypto flop at the moment and yet another boom is coming as long as more people are talking about it :)
@Sylencer Go to proper work and potentially still can't afford to own a roof under your head in their lifetimes but be good soldiers and keep paying bills that go up annually more than the income?

well sure... if someone who is pathologically sensitive is putting his finger right into the discharged water he might feel this 0.5 Celsius increase.
but this 0.5 C increase goes only toward 1/32,000 part of the lake volume per day.

OTOH if someone stood right next to me while I was entering the water, he might complain that my body is raising the local water temperature by MORE than 0.5 Celsius.

If the complicated mathematical formula was based on things like World Community Grid where the result is actually of scientific research then the advancements we would have made over the last 5 years would be incredible. It just needs to be made into a useful result that helps research imo.

I can easily create a ban list for you, that will make some chairs burn instantly.

Jokes aside - the technology at its core is amazing. Blockchain can be a perfect solution for various problems. But just like so many things around the globe - it's the implementation that stinks. I sincerely doubt that crypto in its current form will be anything other than a speculative currency.
It has to be regulated in one way or another. In its current form, it's a disease / a waste.

Blockchain, in my eyes, has wonderful future potential.
    Fully agreed, kudos.
