The new X4 has 114 dB audio clarity and 24-bit/192 kHz high-resolution playback.
The older X3 model actually has a better output spec with 32-bit / 192 kHz playback.
Both appear to have the same 600Ω headphone amp
The X4 then has a combo Optical / Line-in jack, while the X3 has just a line-in jack
Dynamic range is slightly different with 114 dB on the X4 vs 115 dB on the X3.

I have a X3 on my desk looking at the pictures the back ports are the same. The X3 also has optical and a line-in port at least they are labeled the same.

Does anyone know if any of these external dacs support dolby headphone. I'm still using an Asus Xonar Essence STX and whilst the sound is great, i'd like to move it to an external setup. Better for cooling and routing of some watercooling gear.

Dolby Headphone 2.0 is cool and all but you should really look into buying that 15$ or something for Dolby Atmos for superior surround & sound. As an answer to your question and I do follow these very closely they are pretty much proprietary virtual surrounds like in this Creative case just SBX to replace Dolby/DTS:X. Few support DTS:X(which also can be bought for the same 15$ or something for any stereo headset from MS Store) but haven't seen Dolby Headphone lately. You can get Dolby Headphone to any headset though via Peace EQ & Equalizer APO. Could explain but there are simple instructions via Googling. It just takes few minutes and a reboot.

A downgrade in every way, sounds like Creative quality to me.

I'll stick with my Sound Blaster ZxR setup which was released... late 2011 I believe.

You can buy Dolby Headphone from Microsoft Store and it works with every Sound Card and Headphone. Also you have a lot of options to tweak.

I agree some people failed to see that there is Optical-input jack that is combo with Line-input jack where X3 didn't have any Optical-input only a Line-input jack wake up people and pay attention to the labeling of the input and output ports.

There no such thing as Atmos Headphone there still only 2 Channel Stereo Sound end story and Atmos is just encoding which is decoded by software or hardware which is precursor of A3D HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function)

Atmos itself is a waste of time until you have an actual 5.1.2 setup at the minimum imo.

It has Super X-Fi which are adjusted to the users ears, makes it sound like listening to speakers in the room, and has profiles for the most common audiophile headphones.
But it is rather weak when trying to drive a pair of 600 Ohm headphones with it.
The Mic input is rather good on it, can make even a bad mic get through loud and clear, which even some good onboard cards have issues with.

Each on their own :) Anyhow gave enough clues to get dolby headphone on any stereo headset if one wishes so.

Personally I prefer to stick to the sound source without adding anything artificial, hence why my X3 has been on the shelf for several months.

Waiting for a g6 and x7 update with bluetooth out.

Bought the super thing but it sounded better with the cheap headphones they included than with my own much more expensive headphones.

I have found the dolby app in windows with detail setting is all the sound tweaking i want.

What I really want from creative is an x7 and g6 updated with bluetooth out.
