Well, every 3 or 4. But depends.

    I went back in the day I went from a Q9550 to a 3750K, later to a 3770K.
Then from that to a 6700K.
Now, I am on AMD with 5800X
I will probably wait 3 revisions of AM5 to upgrade to it.

    Intel P3 700 from 2000-2003,
then AMD Athlon 2500+ From 2003-2005(Killed by my own misuse/overheated northbridge chip, trojan viruses, rootkits, pci slot fan fire ((didn't clean dust out well then oops)
    AMD Sempron late 2005-2010
    AMD Athlon 64 3500 til 2012,
AMD A6-3620 APU (System still in use by Mom these days))
    AMD FX 8310 January 2016-August 2017,

Then purchased my First Intel based system in years I7 7700, Kept til June 2020, when upgraded to Intel 10700 with Gigabyte B460M_DS3H

For me it more I dont want to be bother anymore to rebuild less I have no choice cause games no longer play to my stardards. Which Still 1080p 60FPS at High usual when I cant keep 60fps at High with the games I have is when I start to get that itch. But with prices being what they are these days I zero intrested rebuilding and I am happy I got hold of PS5. I not paying 800$ for a 400$ card, cause nothing can be found or it being scapled. my people are selling my 1070ti USED for 700$ if not more and I played 430$ for new.

I can probably sell all my old part laying around and get some sorta profit now, instead being lucky to get 50$

No idea. I've had multiple AMD/Intel Cpu's over the years. But since going 1440p for the last year I've realized there really isn't a need for a really high end CPU anymore if you're just gaming and happy with 60fps.

    absolutely
to drive a 1660Ti at 1440p you don't need much.Even with a better card these days a new-ish 6/12 cpu will have no problem and 10400 goes for like 130eur here.
I mainly got myself a 10700f 8/16 cause I wanted a new, quality board and a new system altogether,my previous z97 was going over 6 years old, overclocked for the whole of its life, and it was prolly the last call to get some decent money for it.I realized new boards cost so much that I'd rather not buy a 180eur low-end z490/x570 and just spend a little extra for a quality one.I initially went with a 10500,really great value cpu, with intent to put a 8/16 in there in 2-3 years. But then i7/i9 dropped so much that I upgraded to 10700f not long after building the system.Very happy with it atm, should serve me for a loooong time.It currently doesn't even break a sweat with a 1070 but I'll be using this system for qute some time,so it's ripe and ready for rtx4000/rx7000
It's the first time I actually tried to "futureproof" my system, spending a little extra in hopes of holding on to it for longer.

I usually do not upgrade CPU's until at least a generation has passed so I went from a Ryzen 2700x to a Ryzen 5800x.

    I went from an i7 950 @ 4GHz with 18GB DDR3-1600 on X58 to AMD 3600 w/ 32GB DDR4-3200 @ 3600 on AM4 with some NVMe love... so yeah, I got some distance on that x58 system. What helped is that the mobo had a 2-channel SATA6 controller.

hmm, pretty sure the Rampage 3 Black was the only one with a full speed SATA6 controller, most of the others used a 1x lane marvel.

I Find my self using the same system until it either no longer functions , or it is unable to fulfill my needs. from 2000 -2010, this meant an upgrade every 2-3 years, but now its been 10+ years, and I haven't had a need to upgrade the platform on my main system, just the gpu and the psu.

I'm still using an Asus Rampage V edition 10 black and an 8 core 6900k. I'm holding out for a ddr5 setup from AMD or Intel. I don't think any current CPU's other than benchmarking would be much of an upgrade.

Depends. In the 90s, you pretty much had to upgrade on every CPU gen and many times even within the same gen. I went from a Pentium 1 90Mhz (that was the first PC ever that I owned myself) to a Pentium 1 133MHz for example. With everything back then being software-rendered by the CPU (GPUs didn't exist yet,) this was a big perf boost.

In the past, it wasn't so much about CPU gen, but about clock speed increases within the same gen. A Pentium 1 60Mhz for example couldn't compete with a Pentium 1 200MHz. They were the same gen, but the perf difference was extreme. And before that, a 486 66MHz was a huge upgrade from a 486 33MHz. So it was normal back then to upgrade within the same CPU gen. Manufacturers didn't just bring out new CPU generations. In-between that, they were bringing out much faster CPUs of the same generation.

CPU speed upgrades were rather frantic in the past. This lasted quite a while, but became less and less frantic as time went on. Not sure exactly when this calmed down. Probably when multi-core CPUs became mainstream and Intel started releasing most of the models of a new gen at the same time rather than giving you a slow model now and then introduce a same-gen model that's twice as fast two years later.

I just wait until prices goes down, had a Phenom II 1055, then I was lucky to find a Ryzen 5 1600X for 90 Euro, a few years ago....even used ones is more expensive :p I want to get a Ryzen 7 2700X, but dont have the money now.

Complete history of my main rig CPUs (there were others for family members, including some from this list, but not including them here):

Intel 8080 (an ancient 8-bit machine, learned a bit of assembly on it but it was used mostly for black&white gaming on a TV)
Zilog Z80 (8-bit ancient computer Sinclair Spectrum compatible, learned BASIC on it)
Intel 8086 "IBM PC XT compatible" (loaner from school as I developed software for them and they got tired of the guards kicking me out of school at 10pm in the evening)
Intel 286-16Mhz (loaner from my aunt work/job, few months)
AMD? 386SX-33Mhz (my first owned PC ever in 1997, before that I used those 8-bit ancient computers)
Intel 486DX2 (massive upgrade over the 386)
AMD 5x86-133 (a 486 actually, at double the speed of the DX2)
AMD K5-100 Mhz (was faster than 5x86 by quite a lot, superscalar pays off)
AMD K6-II 233Mhz (temporary loan from job)
AMD Duron-600Mhz (wow, what a jump it was vs. K6-II)
    AMD Athlon-XP 2200+ (@ 1800Mhz I think?, those times were weird)
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (First 64-bit CPU)
Intel Pentium-D 805 (My first Dual-Core, necessary for Supreme Commander to work, one of the first games that just didn't play properly with single core)
Intel Core2 Duo E-4300 (significantly more efficient than D-805, but not really that much faster at stock... but I didn't run it at stock, this was my biggest percentage overclock ever... from 1800 Stock... I ran it at 3000!! ... those were the days of glorious overclocking)
Intel Core2 Quad Q-6600 (another big boost vs E-4300, also overclocked massively, close to 3600 Mhz, vs 2400 stock ... surprisingly, still works today, I still have it)
Intel i5 3570K (still runs today, it's used as a secondary archive/offline backup machine)
Intel i7 6800K (finally decided to step up from quad core, but due to how the situation was in 2016, that required the very expensive HEDT platform - offline at the moment, but operational)
AMD Ryzen7 1700 (bought for my server, to replace the 3570K, but ended up using it myself, as it was more efficient than 6800K, so main rig and server got swapped - in operation in my mother's PC)
AMD Ryzen7 3700X (was my primary CPU until just a month ago - is now running my server/NAS)
AMD Ryzen7 5800X (current primary CPU, this thing is bloody fast !)

I still remember and love each one of them!

Zero interest in buying gee-whiz technology for thousands. That meant I held onto Core Two Duo 8500 for way too long. It's possible to get through if you only like ground breaking games that define the genre and put out for flagship GPUs. 5ghz eight core CPU at very attractive price is worth the wait though. NvMe is significantly more real world, game-changing, speed wise IMO. Just saying.

I buy only when a new killer app or must buy game appears and needs it. For work, school or creativity (sorely lacking), everything works fine as is.

I still have on my hands - Dothan, Lynnfield and Haswell.

1 core > 4 core > 4c/8t because my PSU blew in the previous set.

I'm probably one of the LAST Gurus still on 4 cores.

Cyberpunk WAS going to be my PC upgrade excuse but underwhelming RT, and pandemic put everything on hold.

I am waiting for ARMA 4 at this point to move to the next CPU/MB/RAM generation which will be an upgrade over DayZ SA.

@Valken , I think you`ll have a long long wait for Arma4, although A3 runs and looks amazing on my 5800x with multi core enabled in the dashboard my game runs fine @4k with maxed details and long draw distance.

Didn't include the C64 and Atari system, had a few additional C2D's too, running as small servers though.
For me the 3 top CPU's would probably be the Cyrix, Q9650 and the 4790K, and maybe also that old Commodore 286 12MHz with 1024KB RAM and 10Mb HDD.
Yeah, time goes fast sometimes, 2 years younger though. :D
