my 850 PRO 256 GB is 7 years old 4.3 years Power ON 47 TB written 91% Health Warranty: 10 years warranty, or 150 TBW, whichever comes first. My warranty will expire 3 years from now having written 45% of 150 TB. So it looks to me that warranty-wise 'years' is more important than 'TB written', because it will expire sooner. I would need 22 years to write 150 TB at current rate.
Even more on the Samsung PRO were on last gen you have some TLC and some "real" MLC in the same product line, all badged MLC.

Can you please explain? The Samsung 970 Evo (and even the Evo Plus) are somewhat cheaper at the same capacities. Why are you recommending the 980 and also, why didn't you point out the fact that Samsung themselves have better and at the same time cheaper SSDs than this one? So what exactly did you mean by "value proposition" in your review if this SSD is actually more expensive than Samsung's better SSDs? What "value" are you talking about?
Another decent performing NVMe 3.0 drive, with the most impressive function being it's large pSLC cache that means almost no write holes unless you write a silly huge chunk to the drive.......but otherwise I think you just choose based on capacity & price, the lack of write holes is the stand out feature of this drive though.
My 840 Pro is also still going strong, somewhere in the 60 TB's written. Might even outlive the newer SSD at this rate :x
So this can be had for $129 vs $143 for 970 evo in 1TB flavor. Just barely cheaper at this point, but it is cheaper.

Well, it's kind of self-evident I mean, how many times can you rewrite the whole SSD? That number is constant for all sizes. For example if you rewrite a 500GB SSD 100 times, that's 50TB of data written. If you rewrite a 1TB SSD 100 times, that's 100TB of data written. So really, the warranty rating is about how many times you can rewrite every block on the SSD. That number is the same for all capacities. But if you translate that number to TBW, then it becomes clear the larger capacity models will last longer if you write the same amount of data compared to a smaller capacity model.
Not sure how any samsung 980 series drive can be recommended, the 970 series is better value for money.
I would recommend this SSD only to my enemies... I don't know what Samsung was thinking - maybe fool some people into buying but why??? - there are better propositions from Samsung itself - not to talk about competition...
If I pay the premium for nvme I want dram cache. That said its a pretty low MSRP and far better performance than a 3.5 without the durability issues of QLC. I would pick one of these up if they are ever on sale for like $50 for 500GB. However the 970 EVO is $75 right now on sale and i would rather pay the extra $5. Another good cheap option is to buy OEM Samsung nvmes off eBay which is my goto for 256GB which is enough for most standard usages, usually you can find them as low as $30.
