Valheim - Viking survival/exploration game

So this kinda came out of nowhere for me! Released this week into early access and already has thousands of overwhelmingly positive reviews on steam. I don't normally play survival games because I find a lot of them are stuck using the same old horror/zombie tropes but this one caught my eye with its Viking/Norse theme and mythology and priced at 15 quid/20 bucks, I thought "what the hell" and took a gamble which I must say appears to have paid off because this game is great!

The game's got pretty charming visuals as they opted for low poly models and low res textures in the style of old PS1 games but jazzed it up with modern lighting and post processing, giving it a great aesthetic appearance and its actually really pretty to look at in places. Couple that with lovely, chill music and you're good to go either solo or with up to 9 other players though the devs recommend keeping it to 3-5 players at the moment.

There's already a roadmap in place for this year involving 4 content updates adding new stuff to the game. Some further media below.

Like the premise of a Viking based survival game but that visual style + monsters turns me right off.

This popped up on my radar this morning. Never played a survival game as I never felt I'd enjoy them but this looks interesting and seems to have been received really well.

 

Just killed the 1st boss tonight, me and the missus. Wasn't as tough as I was anticipating but then again I had come across some tips and tricks before hand which helped. Going in with a full belly and fire arrows and some upgraded armour did the trick. On to the Black Forest tomorrow! The 2nd boss looks like a right pain in the arse!

 

by all account for an EA game it is near flawless.

Been playing this all day. Love it. Stunning game.

 

Games blown up pretty nice. When I started the thread I was hesitant to mention that the game has thousands of overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam because at the time of writing it was around 2700. Well... 3 days later and there's over 10k overwhelmingly positive reviews. Games subreddit has grown from 4k members to almost 20k since the end of last week.

 

Yep great game. If CDPR released this, people would be jizzing all over the place. Utter gem. Everyone agrees. Everywhere.

Easily the best new game I've played in the last 3 years or so.

 

Well that didn't take long ... Valheim already passed 2M sold copies!

 

Ventured into our first dungeon today, opened the first door and 3 skeletons came and kicked our asses. Went and crafted one of the big bad 2 handed maces that does an AOE knockback.... them skellies gonna be getting it tomorrow!

 

Played again all day today, can't get enough. After killing the first boss, I moved my base close to Black Forest and set up a new little hamlet.

Tier 3 bronze gear now, armour and weapons and such. I'm going to do some hyping myself up tomorrow and then hit the 2nd boss.

What a game!

Only DOTA2 and CSGO have had more players than Valheim today. Mindboggling.

I personally cant play games that has minecraft-ish graphics... ruins it for me. Call me a graphics whore, but if it aint got amazeballz graphics, then im not playing it. They could have gone the WoW route, and made the visuals look like it was painted, rather than realistic, then it could still look good, without being super demanding. But those blocky low res foilage and textures... urgh. But impressive steam rating the game has got.

 

I'm normally a bit like that but in this game I find it doesn't bother me because things only start looking crappy when you view them close and most of the time I'm looking into the distance. The atmosphere from the lighting and weather effects also help make up for the low res textures

 

yet your display picture is a sprite.

 

Sadly i cant get past that - simply ruins it for me.

 

And this is relevant, how?

 

I like how it looks, kinda reminds me of Outcast (1999), the texture work kinda looks like flat voxels.
