I'm very happy that Nvidia are being investigated, so they should be, after bitcoin scandal, they need to be dealt with.

It would be weird if a deal of this size/scope wasn't investigated by regulatory bodies.

Nvidia intends to let ARM continue doing its own thing in the UK.

They were accused (by investors) of lying about what purpose hardware was being sold for - gaming vs cryptomining.

I would be surprised if the UK investigation was of any merit. Considering how corrupt a good chunk of all the government institutions are, this is more likely a formality based on size of purchase rather than anything else.

If the UK cared, they would have stopped the initial sale to SoftBank.

The only other factor here would be if there is some pressure from China about the sale in view of the US IP restrictions, as being owned by Nvidia I believe would restrict the future use of ARM IP in China.

EU regulatory bodies presided over the softbank sale as the UK was still in the EU.

There is also a massive difference between softbank, a holding company, purchasing ARM, and Nvidia, a technology company, that's competitors to more than half of ARM's customers.

I would have thought if anything this would be looked on as better than Softbank who don't even make stuff and could have just bought ARM to asset strip it. Nvidia as a profitable tech company are going to invest in the tech. The fact that they allowed Softbank to takeover on the back of a few vague promises suggests they'll be just as happy with Nvidia as long as they repeat the same lines.

The question isn't about what's going to happen to ARM from an innovation standpoint, the question is does the buyout create an anti-competitive risk to other companies.

Softbank doesn't directly compete against Apple, Amazon, Google, Etc. Them owning ARM doesn't give the some kind of competitive advantage over any of those companies. Nvidia, on the other hand, competes with all those companies directly and now they are purchasing a company that licenses IP that's used in hardware all that all those companies develop.

Just imagine the monopolies this acquisition will allow Nvidia to create.

Actually I think over a decade they could have a virtual monopoly like Intel has had. It would be a different kind of monopoly owning the ISA like Intel does but none the less they would work out a way.

Dont see what the EU has to do with any company residing in the UK,
    Nothing to do with them.
    never has been never will.

this is a smart move by a company renowned for its uArch.
this is just a "hey look at us we're relevant" by the UK, actually doing anything about the ARM sale is antithetical to a tory gov't.
ARM will continue its shiny-ness and Britain will still have a toe in the business.

Nvidia if they're as fiendishly clever as i suspect they may be, will be bringing its own designs to ARM especially in the expanding world of automotive electronics, not just data and research centers.
