Is it possible to upgrade the 3080 to 12GB of Vram?

Assuming you knew what you were doing, installed the necessary caps and what not. Could you get two more ram modules and install them in the empty slots on the motherboard?

Or is there some limitation that would prevent that from ever happening?

I wouldn't ever do it myself, I'd just like to know.

You suggest it's possible to find 2 modules and glue them there? It's not that simple. We aren't talking about Ram here. vRam isn't something you go buy it legitimately and authenticated. How do you even know it's genuine, if you succeed buying it from an unknown source? (Unless you have connections with Micron.)

Install the caps, resistors... whatever needs fitting, take a broken 3000 series card with the same modules and heat gun them on like you do with any broken component you'd change.

Would it work? Or is there a limitation in the design of the PCB or firmware that stops it?

    Short answer no.
Longer - do u see any previous generations card with manually increased VRAM by users? If it would be doable, somebody for sure would add at this point 2gb VRAM to his gtx 980, 2080/s

those 64bits of memory interface are literally fused off and cannot be attached to anything.

I recall seeing video on fixing broken vram chips on a gpu, but, I don't recall vram upgrading.

12MB voodoo 2's are mixed density.

The fact we have to go back that far to find an example means that was the exception to prove the rule.

I thought the 16MB Matrox G400 could be upgraded too (one generation later than the Voodoo 2), but they just have empty squares on the board where the RAM ICs should be, unlike it's predecessor.

What we need is modern examples and I'm struggling to find any.

Y, BUT they just swapped memory, not added new to increase capacity.

Even if its possible, I don't think that is worth to do it, gddr6 is not cheap and nvidia will launch soon new 3000 series gpu with more memory. So if you want an upgrade, better sell your gpu a buy a new one in maybe two months.

    Weren't asking you, was I?

I imagine it indeed would be with the right bios modifications too.

you asked in general and the only one in this thread clued in enough to answer is me.

No, you cannot upgrade the 3080 to 12GB, the bits that would be attached to the additional 2 modules are fused off by a laser.

You could have posted the information in the original reply instead of just "no", fueling your fetish for getting your post count up.
