No matter how well built the riser is, it can still cause major upset for signals and data timing.
The PCI-E bus isnt designed for extra length with more connections and dissimilar metals in the chain, especially running at full speed.
Each slight change in impedance (from connections and changes in metal) cause part of the signal to be reflected back where it came from, increasing noise, decreasing signal strength and further changing the time a signal is accepted as valid (due to taking longer to reach a valid level) as well as the extra propagation time taken to travel the length of the cable.
Thats not to mention the extra interference to signals and data when they are placed in the open with nothing to protect them. A PC is noisy!
If you have a problem when using one, make it a prime suspect.

I have exactly the same issue, with a very similar set up (GPU/Soundcard/3x NVMe drives) and the same riser cable. From my investigations I agree with Mufflore - I think its the PCI-E riser card. I've pulled out every drive except my boot drive + the soundcard and it still reports PCI-E 4 8x on the GPU. Unfortunately I cant directly test the GPU in the motherboard without ripping my entire rig down due to the length of the 3090 hitting my radiator, however by process of deduction I think its the most likely senario.

TBH, it doesnt bother me too much - PCI-E 4 8x has as much bandwidth as PCI-E 3 16x so I dont think there will be any significant performance impact. When I next clean my loop out (which will be when I get my GPU block) I'll check and confirm the issue.

I will check it when my block arrives as I will be rebuilding the loop and can plug the GPU straight in be disappointed if it is though because as games get more complex the reason I bought the 3090 was to future proof for at least 3 years I can see 16x being needed at some point otherwise why make it

It actually doesn't and the 3090 never goes above 65 degrees. I was very surprised, especially considering the fact that my previous set up consisted of 2xEVGA 2080 Ti Hybrids that never went above 65-70 degrees.

For a bit of fun, a quick benchmark testing memory overclock.
Using a 10700K with TRUE120 cooler for now, DDR4 3000c19 (this memory is naff and will be going back)
Single run with card fully warmed up.
GPU use kept constant (98%) by putting the focus on task manager while the benchmark ran.
(otherwise GPU use drops to around 50% and 70% lasting over 10 seconds periodically).

    Ambient 20.5C
Heaven 4.0, DX11 all settings maxed, 2560x1440p, windowed
    Fan speed locked at 90%.
GPU using power bios, power limit maxed in Afterburner.

    Stock memory clock = 9,750MHz
    * Score = 158.9fps / 4003
    Max temp 62C
    Core clock 1995 - 2010MHz

    Memory overclock +1200MHz = 10,950MHz
    * score = 162.2 / 4085
    Max temp 62C
    Core clock 1980 - 1995MHz

    Memory overclock = 12.3%
    Performance increase = 2.05%

Due to the power limit, GPU clocks were 0.75% lower during the overclocked memory test.
Therefore peak performance increase with 12.3% memory overclock is potentially 2.8% when running Heaven benchmark.
When power limited, it is 2.05%

It will be interesting to see how this differs with games.

It's crazy just how power limited the 3090 is... even with the power limit set to 480 watts on my strix, i still get core clocks dropping from 2080 to about 1900 in some games, like here in bf5 @ 6k ultra (fps cap at 58).

Wow I can get to 80 on mine with furmark and thats with the case side open at present as its too wide to close it am having sweats thinking about all that dust going into my fans etc

Yeah, same here. It certainly would be nice to have a BIOS without a power limit.

The other option would be to do some undervolting, although even with quite a bit of undervolting I can see the power limit kick in here and there, for example in RDR2 during Nights in Saint Denis with maxed out details at 4k resolution, but at least it won't drop clocks as far as if you don't undervolt.

Same with my FE. Quite impressed with the cooler actually. The cooler itself gets really quite hot (afterall its like a massive radiator!) but the GPU doesnt go above 65 degrees and the cooler itself is reasonable quiet too.

That's only cause it doesnt go up to nearly 500 watts though :p

I reckon that would be rather dangerous for the chip xD Gpu would probably spike to 700 watts if it was to maintain a constant 2080 mhz on the core in all games !

True :D Although I have maxed out the power limit! It would be nice to unlock a bit more than the 400watts I believe the FE does with the power limit is up. Does anyone know if you can flash the FE bios with something that has a higher power limit? Would it work?

    Hi there

I don't think you can flash FE GPU with AIB BIOS ,only way how to remove power limit on FE is shunt mod sadly

Same applied as well for RTX 2080Ti Founders Editions, you can't crossflash these GPU with AIB BIOS

Running on my Palit RTX 3090 GamingPro KFA2/Galax 390W with which I'm getting higher scores or better results but in actual gaming GPU will downclock to 1920-1995MHz when I hit 100% utilisation

I would say 480-520W will be sweet spot for RTX 3090,literally now thinking shunt mod my RTX 3090

    Hope this helps

    Thanks, Jura

Had a feeling that was the case! Still the card is plenty fast, and I'll max it out once its on water and see how it does before considering any mods :)

I’m sure I’d hit close to 80 degrees or higher if I was running Furmark as well. Not really a good representation of actual in game utilization IMO.

I’m at 400w(114%) as well, would have been nice to go higher. That being said, my 3090 boosts to 1965-2010mhz with a custom fan curve that is pretty relaxed.

i thíng better thing like maximize power comsumption is find sweet pot
i have more FPS on 1950MHz/0,85V than 2150MHz/1,03V because PL going down very agresively and fast
and on 0,85V just have simple allways 1950 with +-15MHz fluctuation because temp raising
and diferencies between 2100 vs 1900 is more about benchmarks than game especialy if you have 370W vs 450W or 500W
good tool is time spy because calculating average clock and this clock is your meta
of course if 2100 is max and average too you lucky and happy boy :D even under 400W :D

Had been using a +400mhz mem oc without problem until yesterday. Game crashes all over the shop.

A slight increase in room temp can do it.
    A long gaming sesh too.
It takes a while to find what is fully stable, the card might change slightly as it beds in.

But its good to establish memory speed is the cause first.
When the problem starts happening, drop the clock speed to default.
Another possibility, your PSU is being pushed to its limit.

It won't beat it performance-wise, only on perf/value.

3080 Ti probably is 20GB using 320 bus.

    3090 is 24GB using 384 bit bus.

3090 wins at higher res, probably won't change.

Not even sure that 3080 Ti will get the same amount of cores as 3090. It might be 5% cutdown instead of 2% cutdown like on 3090.

By the time 3080 Ti is out and in stock, first 3090 owners had their cards for 3-6 months. So, thats what you pay for. Early adopter premium.

I took the 3080 for 699 with 90% of the perf at 1440p. At +175 MHz on the core, I'm probably at 3090 speed anyway.
