Who's getting a RX6000 Series Card?

Higher the resolution you used, lower the refresh rate available. And combination always remained under Graphics<->monitor connection limit.
Year ago? VSR is here for 6 years. So that's about your answer for "before". You likely do not even remember how different cards were limited with VSR to different resolutions and refresh rates combinations. Registry hacks for it and so on.

 

Okay my bad about the initial refreshrate limitations, I found this pic, and I vaguely remember this too:


It's obviously outdated now, but Fiji-cards had indeed an older display controller, so 4K was out of the question.
However, the thing is, you made it seem like the monitor was doing the scaling, while it was the display controller on the card itself which did the downsampling, hence the limitations as opposed to a software solution like GeDoSaTo, or nVidia's shader-method, and thus the requirement of registry hacks.

I don't know when the improvements to VSR were introduced, but I feel it must be longer ago than "a few months".

 

Changes did happen more than a year ago, that's true. But nVidia users in general would not know. And it should be pointed out as people are better at remembering troubles than positive changes which do not affect them.
At beginning VSR worked same way as CRU, that's why my monitor reported different resolution@refresh combinations and in certain scenarios run out of range with VSR.
I could have as well use just CRU with reduced timings for better results. Now, it is quite good. I think AMD got scaling things under control some time before Integer Scaling been introduced.

 

That's not entirely true, or VSR might not have worked well in your case.

I know exactly of those "out of range"-issues reported by monitors, but in my case that only happened when I tried to use CRU to override native Res/refresh rate. Plus when I finally did manage to force my FullHD@60Hz to 1440p, it looked terrible.
When VSR was finally released as a response to DSR, it worked as it was advertised: by tricking games into believing higher resolutions are available, and letting the graphics card's scaler handle the downscaling, and sending the native Res to my monitor.

Sure it didn't always work, especially that 3200x1800 resolution, and works way better now (just as well as Nvidia s DSR, but without the filter) but it was faster than GeDoSaTo, which did it on a software level.

2160p wasn't available on my card, because of video controller limitations, and required an R9 285/380 or Fury.

RX 6800 XT will be the upgrade path from my GTX 1080. But as other said. Depending on availability of course.

2K on PC looks so similar to 4K its crazy. Better filtering and higher graphics options.

 

which one do you think I should get?
should I drop the $1k on the 6900?
gotta be a noticeable difference from my 2080ti otherwise it just ain't worth it.

 

6800xt will fit in quite nicely with my 4k 60hz freesync monitor

 

6800XT and OC + UV + Tweaks
350€ saved

 

But 6900xt is full fat navi.

 

It's similar to FuryX & Vega 64 --> To Fury Pro & Vega 56
6800XT will have better UV and can be OCed a notch better than 80CU Unit.
2500MHz on 6800 is possible (60CUs will have smaller impact on Temps IMhO).

I think so take me w/Grain of salt.

 

I have to upgrade my CPU First. My R5 2600 can barely keep up with my 5700XT. I think its even bottlenecking my 5700XT a little. I'll probably get a 5900 or 5800X

 

It might reach the stock 6900xt performance with similar or less wattage for sure with some UV and OC. But in the end doing same treatment for both 6900xt will be faster (with higher power usage ofc)
