Thanks for the thorough explanation. You and wrathloki have convinced me to stick to 3080. I am going to get the Best Buy warranty with it, so if there is a powerful 3080Ti, I can just return my 3080 for store credits, and use those credits toward the 3080Ti.

All leaks around the web are underwhelming. Only in 4k you feel the power of RTX 3000 series. Up to 1440p differences are not what you call next generation. So, if you really need a gpu for high frame-rates across ALL RESOLUTIONS, only RTX 3090 is viable. **** it I dare say. Lolz!

I will wait for an RTX 3080 Super/TI to decide my true next generation gpu. RTX 3090 is a huge fiasco with that massive amount of memory combined with extra cores for sales appeal. It is not future-proof. Until developers can make use of it, RTX 4070 will beat it with only "12gb" ram.

Why would a 3090 behave differently at low resolutions? The bottleneck would just be worse...

Raw power due to higher specs maybe? GPU isn't something you can manually DIY.

This sounds just wrong. The 3090 has like a higher 17% compute and that's it.

It makes sense that this gen would show better in 4k.

I'm personally getting something for the explicit goal of running things locked at 4k60 (yes, DLSS counts). Current cards can get everyone above 240Hz in eSports.

If you want 1080p just wait for the 3050/6700.

I cannot see any of them giving me 120fps average in all 1440p games with ultra settings, unless I get an overpriced 3090. So I sound more than right IMHO. I won't even dare to think 240fps@1440p with 3090 if I use ultra settings instead of medium/high.

Problem is, even some titles are now beginning to show signs of bottle-necking at 1440p. Evidence of that is apparent by looking at the 4k difference. The top cards shine at 4k, less so at 1440p, more so at 1080p. In FC ND, the 3080 @ 1440p is only 14% better than a 2080S, and only 27% better than a 2060S.

I highly doubt that the rest of your system can do that. A 2080 can probably do 1440p60 everything, so if you are reasonable 1440p120 should be reachable.

I did read the article and there wasn’t a 35% for any of the benchmarks, I didn’t realize you were making up your own number. Also keep in mind that those benchmarks showed the older cards as slower so 35% slower doesn’t mean that the 3080 is 35% faster, that’s not how the math works.

Or be patient and wait for the 3080ti 20gb.

People are always saying be patient and wait but at some point you just have to pull the trigger or you’ll be waiting forever. There will always be something new around the corner, always.

There are times when there is a long street before reaching the corner, nearer the release date can be worth the wait.

Well for one thing we know nothing about a potential 3080 ti release date, that could be a year down the road. As for the AMD stuff that’s still months away. Then when that stuff comes out well there might just be another announcement on the horizon. I think my point still stands, you just gotta jump in at some point.

I didn’t even know this was a thing. How well does it work?

It will be the 3080S or 3080ti, I think the former, and possible 20GB versions (plus 16GB for the 3070).
They will be released long after Xmas I reckon but over a 2 year period, this length of time can be worth hanging on for.
Especially when 10GB or less is causing concern, both the potential 12GB and 20GB versions of 3080 numbered cards could have benefit.

I’m not concerned about 10GB of RAM in the least. What I am concerned about is my very outdated video card and some high profile game releases that I’ve been waiting for that my current card will struggle with.

When the 1080 ti came out, I waited to see the next thing. When the 2080 came out, I waited. When the 2080 super came out, I waited. I’m done waiting.

Lots of people have older video cards that could use an upgrade. Yeah, of course if you’re running a 2080 or something then waiting makes sense. But nobody says that when they say to wait. They just make blanket statements that everyone should wait. Well no, not everyone should wait.
