I don't think overclocking for gaming really matters much, sure if you need 3 to 6 more frames to make it playable but at the higher end it would suck if you needed to do that.
if you want to benchmark sub zero it does not even matter at all for higher binning, on water yes.
porky chips that run hot and need voltage just love the zero temps other not so much just generally speaking of coarse.

I am soooooooo due for a new card and will go for a 30xx series card just for ss4 i wont support many other games.
my msi 980 and 750ti will go into retirement, a 3060 will be the 750ti replacement not sure on a 3090 0r 3080 heck maybe a 3070 will do

750 is recommended for the 3080 and 3090 in the official specs.

I am stuck between 3080 and 3090. I can afford the 3090, but I feel like it's being bumped up by $800 mostly for its extra 14GB memory. Do you guys think it would be a waste for me to go with 3090 @ 1440p resolution? Asking because 2080 really bit me when I got it -- I couldn't hit my 144 refresh rate from the get go in multiple games, so I am trying to avoid experiencing something similar for the next 3-4 years at least. I appreciate any input on this.

Absolutely a waste at that resolution. If you’re so worried about the ram just think about budgeting that extra $800 for a couple years from now when they release a card that stomps the 3090.

Also, is not hitting 144 in every game that big of a deal? I presume if you’re running a 144hz monitor it’s a variable refresh rate monitor right? Should be pretty damn smooth even if you’re dropping down to 100.

Read a lot of the reviews. I'm sure there will be some offering advice and tests @1440 to give you a better feel how things fit in. It is also likely you might upgrade your monitor or buy a 4K TV over the next 3-4 years and will have one less worry if you get the 3090, though the 3080 should also do just fine.

Those are some valid points. 144 FPS only matter to me in online games - I could make do with around 100FPS for single player games. I should mention that I do, every now and then, play my PC games on my 4K TV. Thinking about making the jump to LG's 4K OLED display that support G-Sync. Would you still go with a 3080 for a mix of 1440 and 4k resolutions?

I have a 4k TV that I play on every now and then -- I will upgrading that to LG's OLED display that supports G-Sync and high refresh rate. The thing about waiting for reviews is that these things might be out of stock by then. Thinking further, I could buy the 3080 through Best Buy, and return it if it's not looking promising at 1440 AND 4K. I think that's the best and only way for me to approach this lol

I’d still go with the 3080 and save that money for an upgrade down the line.

It's without a doubt an enormous waste at 1440p, that RAM is only useful if you need it for outside of gaming. It's G6X RAM, essentially quad data rate rather than dual, it has a butt-ton of throughput making the 3080's joke 10GB RAM limit less damning. You could always wait until Oct 14 (or whatever the real date is) for their announcement of more cards which possibly include a 3080 Ti/Super with a rumoured 12GB or 20GB RAM, with 12GB seeming more realistic considering nVidia's push to artificially segment the market by RAM levels. I forgot, there's also that rumoured 16GB 3070 Ti.

A 3090 is a 3080 with 20% more cores, they're the same 102 die for what it's worth. You're not going to get 144 fps in everything maxed with either of those cards. The question is do you want to go from paying $700 to $1500 for 20% more cores, going from 320 bit to 384 bit bus width, and 14GB more RAM that makes no difference at 1440p outside of niche games/heavy texture modding?

I'm waiting until Oct 28 for AMD to disappoint me with their supposedly "$550 or $600 USD" 16GB GDDR6 80CU fat Navi which on paper should be faster than 2x 5700XTs which are pretty much 1080 Ti/2080 in performance. If AMD announce their 12GB 64CU or whatever it is card at $550/$600, instead of the fat one, I'm moving the moon and becoming a hermit.

The pricegap is really massive. i'm considering either 3090, or 3080 and new AMD CPU later this year

Yeah 3080 and all the money you saved off the 3090 goes a long way towards a new system.

You can get a $699 3080 FE now, and a "4080" in a couple of years from now, and it will cost you roughly the same as the 3090. You will lose 10-15% of performance for the first couple of years and you will most likely be as fast or faster with the next card.

Are the Asus 3080 cards the only ones with 2x HDMI? If so that pretty much locks in my choice. No DVI on these cards for my second monitor so I’ll need to run HDMI to that and then I also need an HDMI for my TV.

You play at 4k 60 hz though, right? Your cpu is still plenty for 60 fps, but some games will need that extra gpu power and vram of the 3090 i reckon.

I'm in pretty much the same situation as you, with an older intel 6 core / 12 threads cpu (4930k @ 4,5 ghz), and playing at 4k 60 hz. But i'm gonna wait with the cpu upgrade till intel releases a pcie 4.0 compatible cpu.

    2080 S is 5% faster than 2080 standard.
    Makes no difference whatsoever.

I'd wait for official reviews when it comes to performance.
