My windows 7 pc boots up very fasy but it takes 40 minutes to shut down...I have tried a few things that I found on the internet. Nothing seems to work. Any help would be much appreciated.
could be something wrong with the install, could be some sorta hibernation, could be some peice of software stalling the shut down cause it still running and some programs will cause shutdown to have issue if it still running when shutdown is initiated. I would not personal be still running win 7 at this point atlest not if it connected to the internet
1. Open the Start Menu, type msconfig in the search box, and press Enter. 2. In the General tab, select Selective Startup, and uncheck the Load Startup Items box. 3. Click on the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft services box, click on the Disable all button, and click on OK. 4. Restart
Could it be cleaning the Pagefile at shutdown? This can take up such amount of time. KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0
That could cause that but I dont see how that could cause 40minutes to shut down? honestly I never had such issue with pagefile then again, I not had pagefile bigger then 1gb for a very long time
Yes, because it actually erases it in a "secure" way, which is effing slow if you don't have the pagefile on a SSD and even then, it is still slow.
you would think i knew about that, but i did not that could come in handy for me next time i have something stalling shutdown. hopefull i done with stupid problems since RMA my ram, everything seem to be working correctly, hope saying something about dont jinx me
I think the first thing you should do is determine at which stage the shutdown process is getting stuck and go from there. If you have not already done it, enable verbose status messages.
this could be the reason, how old is the drive and how full is it, is this the only drive you have in the system? Has the drive been defragged frequently? Open CMD as Admin Type in: CHKDSK /F Then type Y and press enter Reboot the PC and when it reboots windows will run a disk check and try to repair any file system errors (corrected by mbk1969) Also, set your page file in control panel turn it to OFF. Reboot, then go back into control panel and set page file to system managed and reboot again. This will delete your page file and create a new fresh one (technically a reformat of your page file by deleting it and starting again). I would strongly advise upgrading to an SSD for your operating system.
chkdsk /R is needed to check for bad sectors. chkdsk /F fixes file system errors. Spoiler Code: chkdsk /? Checks a disk and displays a status report. CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]] [/B] [/scan] [/spotfix] volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name. filename FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation. /F Fixes errors on the disk. /V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file on the disk. On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any. /R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F, when /scan not specified). /L:size NTFS only: Changes the log file size to the specified number of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays current size. /X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid (implies /F). /I NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries. /C NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure. /B NTFS only: Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume (implies /R) /scan NTFS only: Runs an online scan on the volume /forceofflinefix NTFS only: (Must be used with "/scan") Bypass all online repair; all defects found are queued for offline repair (i.e. "chkdsk /spotfix"). /perf NTFS only: (Must be used with "/scan") Uses more system resources to complete a scan as fast as possible. This may have a negative performance impact on other tasks running on the system. /spotfix NTFS only: Runs spot fixing on the volume /sdcleanup NTFS only: Garbage collect unneeded security descriptor data (implies /F). /offlinescanandfix Runs an offline scan and fix on the volume. /freeorphanedchains FAT/FAT32/exFAT only: Frees any orphaned cluster chains instead of recovering their contents. /markclean FAT/FAT32/exFAT only: Marks the volume clean if no corruption was detected, even if /F was not specified. The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by skipping certain checks of the volume.
I want to say thanks to all of you guys that have helped me with this problem of a long shut down on my pc. After cleaning out all of my hard drives and setting my page file to "no page file" my pc has shut down normally for the last few days. I can not be sure what actually did the trick as I did many things here that you guys recommended. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your help, it is much apprecited.
