It will be interesting to see how this develops as the system gets refined. I've been keeping a close eye on this as it expands. Very exciting even if it fails. Just so much to learn.

Also look on the bright side. At least people can't burn down the satellites if they know a person, who knows a person, who might of said 5G is unhealthy but no reasons given.

 

For people with no internet or low speeds, looking great.
I wouldn't trade my 120 download 12 upload with less than 20 ping for this though.

 

So how much is this going to cost? How monitored will you be when using it? What caps will be in place if any?

A bit too soon to say you don't like it? I reckon we'll know these things soon enough but right now it's guesswork. I don't need it as we have decent internet here but if I were out in the sticks I'd be excited about it.

 

I know it's hard to grasp how big the Earth is and how much space is around it.

These satellites are flying hundreds of kilometres apart from each other, and they are really, REALLY small (each one is square of 3 metres per side, not bigger than a trailer platform)

Let's say if you were riding one of them (ignore the lack of breathing in outer space, just a thought experiment), and you have a good Celestron telescope with you, it will be impossible for you to find or see another one.

It's like attempting to see a car in Berlin while being in a balloon in your area in Schawrzwald.
It just can't happen, no matter how hard you try.

Oh for sure if you have limited or no access then this sounds almost too good to be true. But how is it going to work, is spaceX going to be the only provider? Or will they license their bandwidth out to other carriers? Will other carriers or another tech company install their own satellites? Will we have a billion of them in the sky? Is there enough room for that many? What about fixing them if they malfunction? Also where can I apply to be a space engineer

 

People usually thing that something can happen and downplay it until is too late. Its like some dangerous space object which i can hit the earth.

I dunno what is smallest part which we can safely monitored.. and for example we can monitor some loose screw from some obsolete satellite and what can do some hit with fastly rotating object with such small but fastly moving object - if it would be on Earth its like bullet.

Second scenario could some space Apollo disaster.. you have unmanageable space ship, which is trying to safely landing on earth and it in trajectory is some satellite and you can change trajectory of both of them.. Unless we have some tools to shoot down satellite or some jets as its parts. On the water or earth is quite often that some vehicle become unmanageable - because of essential part failure.

Funny part is if we even have someone who is paid to have monitor space for such possibilities.

 

There's another aspect /reason why space agencies aren't worried too much about orbital pollution.

The Earth atmosphere doesn't suddenly stop at 100 km or so (the general consensus for when Earth ends and Space begins).
It actually spreads out to as high as 1000 km, but it's very VERY thin. Still, not zero.

Even at that height, there are a few particles of air that occasionally impact objects in space, slowing them down.
It's the reason they are periodically boosting the Space Station, even if it's at over 400km high. It literally slows down due to friction with the extremely thin air, and if not boosted it would just decay and fall back and burn in the lower atmosphere.

Same thing happens with most low-orbit space junk, it decays and eventually burns.
What will happen with Starlink sats once they run out of fuel.

Now, the geostationary area... that's a different beast. Those satellites fly so far away that there's no air left at all, so their orbit never decays.
But that area is also much more spacious, so the chance of impacts is almost non-existent.

There use to be "free" isp service back when dailup was thing, that service stay free for bout year then went subscription. nothing is free anything introduce as free wont stay free,

As for this I seem faster them most sat service when have no choice if you want interent., Those speed are better then DSL speeds verizon is still trying to sell as service.

Side note we as humanity is are turning our earth orbit it garbage field filled with satellites and the many other bits in piece floating about up there from all the launchs.

US miliatry has branch that solo purpose to track all that satalites and trash up there from all the launched and it been get worse yearly, and and few year back when certain country, did proof concept that that they should shoot down satellite, that made things much worse up there by adding 10's of thousands of tiny parts orbiting earth and speed that would cause massive damage to satellite up there or iss if any one part hits them

as i'm communications engineer working in the VSAT field on board oil services vessels this will be huge speed jump even if it priced high as our company pay 2000$/m per vessel for a speed up to 512 Kbps and more than 4000$/m for 3 Mbps not to mention the latency that can go high up to 800 ms

 

Any prediction on cost ?

Yes oil companies rent oil services vessels and it's daily rate can reach that number depends on oil price and the vessel abilities and the contract period

Plenty of boat owners have an internet sat-dish on their boat, I see them everywhere in NL.
They pay like 100-200 Euro for it, no need for very fast speeds on a boat.


The problem is very slow uploads and high latency. Don't expect to pay online games while on your boat...
... until Starlink, which will resolve that too.
