"The House of Lords Gambling Committee says video game loot boxes should be regulated under gambling laws.

The Lords say they should be classified as "games of chance" - which would bring them under the Gambling Act 2005.

"If a product looks like gambling and feels like gambling, it should be regulated as gambling," their report says.

And they warn that such a change should not wait.

"The government must act immediately to bring loot boxes within the remit of gambling legislation and regulation," said a statement accompanying the report".

So that's a third country, and all developers will do is just disable the ability to buy lootboxes in country X.

Games won't change unless the rest of the world joins.

Next they need to tackle the predatory tactics of mobile games and while at it, hit all these virtual currencies games use, stuff like "CoD points" etc. Just show me a straight up price in my local currency without trying to sell me some point bundles that leave me with excess points that I can't spend. Granted, the latest COD lets me earn a certain amount of these points which is an ok middle ground solution but I still don't like it.

Mobile gaming is far worse in all honestly. But at least it starts to tackle the issue.

That's great news, especially since UK is quite a significant market. It really could potentially lead to more broad restriction on lootboxes or the publishers themselves might find it better to invest into something else instead.

Will we see sponsored loot boxes in the near future now that classification is gambling? Would you be happy to see that?

True. This is the reason why most people see mobile gaming as a bad joke.

Great news, side issue but they also said that gambling firms shouldn't be sponsoring football shirts, agree with this 100%, in fact there should not be any gambling advertising allowed in football IMO.

As much as I like the concept the thread is misleading

The house of lords do not have the power to create laws, this is a suggestion to the lower house (parliament), to make it a law.

Knowing how the house of lords works and having worked with them in the past as part of there IT committee along with people from IBM and Openreach/BT I wouldn't hold by breath yet.

Parliament could give guidelines on what it expects companies to do. This might have an effect in changing the attitudes away from lootboxes. Hopefully completely.
