I was thinking of experimenting and buying Raspberry Pi 4 to run Pi-Hole on it. I am curious whether it improves browsing experience all that much compared to running AdGuard Premium / VPN (configured to use Cloudflare DNS over HTTPS) on mobile devices and uBlock Origin on modern PC's (with YogaDNS and browsers configured to run Cloudflare DNS over HTTPS). If not, then it seems like there is little benefit to Pi-Hole, especially since it only affects local LAN/Wi-Fi and AdGuard Premium / VPN will still be required for mobile phones when only mobile data is available.
I've deployed some Pi with PiHole set up as web ad-blocking and DNS. With Pi 3 wasn't any speed speed improvement (as better results in Speedtest) but overall better page loading, web experience. However, the Pi3 doesn't have true gigabit Ethernet , but Pi4 has. Yes, PiHole affects only your local network, so there's that.
Interesting, I got annoyed with ads on my mobile devices and think I'd try pi-hole. As I understand it just acts as DNS server and blocks black-listed requests. So bandwidth doesn't seem matter, since it doesn't throughput all data between devices (just DNS). DNS resolution: Code: [device] > [pi-hole (filtering)] > [DNS server] > [pi-hole] > [device] Since, pi-hole sits in-between DNS, it would slow down requests a bit (probably unnoticeable), since device doesn't just ask DNS server straight away. As I understand pi-hole speeds up browsing by not downloading junk from internet, so pages loading faster.
