They say the 50% performance increase is not impossible due to 7nm node improvements and features. Sounds though there might be some hardware feature performance trade-offs depending on how they play it.

Why would he bet on your opinion of Nvidia's motives? Considering Nvidia has offered a solid 50% gain between uarchs in recent history, 50% gain in performance doesn't seem absurd. Secondarily I have never once experienced the 'fine wine' AMD fans so giddily promote as a positive. Are you sure you're not mistaking AMD marketing for Nvidia's. From my experience, Nvidia gives you what you get at launch. You might gain a few percent from driver/game tweaks. You pay a bit more for it, but then again, the enthusiast space isn't the budget AMD space.

NVIDIA Seemingly Dropping Price on GeForce RTX 2060 Cards To $299 To Tackle AMD’s Radeon RX 5600 XT

During our visit to the EVGA booth at CES 2020, we came by an interesting NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 card with an even more interesting price range. This card is the EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 KO Edition and it will cost just $299 US compared to the current RTX 2060 pricing of $349 US.
    ...
At $299 US, the new RTX 2060 could offer much better value over the Radeon RX 5600 XT even while being $20 US more expensive. AMD has shown the RX 5600 XT to be up to 15% faster than a GTX 1660 SUPER and 20% faster than a GTX 1660 Ti.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, on the other hand, is up to 20% faster than the GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER while offering added features such as RTX, DLSS, etc. It would be interesting to see how the Radeon RX 5600 XT and the price-cut GeForce RTX 2060 perform against each other in the coming weeks.

A proper showcase for RT and game optimization done right. If only all games could run this well and look as good. Finally quality RT is doable on 4k.

Ampere: Academia Gets The First Production Cray “Shasta” Supercomputer

Indiana University is the proud owner of the first operational Cray “Shasta” supercomputer on the planet. The $9.6 million system, known as Big Red 200 to commemorate the university’s 200th anniversary and its school colors, was designed to support both conventional HPC as well as AI workloads. The machine will also distinguish itself in another important way, being one of the world’s first supercomputers to employ Nvidia’s next-generation GPUs.
    ...
According to Wheeler, the addition of the new GPUs was something of a fluke. The original plan was to outfit the system with Nvidia V100 GPUs, which would have brought its peak performance to around 5.9 petaflops. But as they were getting ready to receive the system, an opportunity presented itself to wait a bit longer and move up to Nvidia’s newer technology. “At the last minute, we decided to take the machine in two phases,” explained Wheeler.
    ...
The first phase of the system – the one currently up and running at IU – is comprised of 672 dual-socket nodes powered exclusively by CPUs, in this case, “Rome” Epyc 7742 processors from AMD. (Yes, AMD ate Intel’s lunch yet again in another high-profile HPC deal). The second phase of the new IU supercomputer will commence this summer and will bring additional AMD Rome nodes online and these will be equipped with one or more of the next-generation Nvidia GPUs.
    ...
As a result of the two-phase approach, waiting a few more months yielded an additional two petaflops of performance, even though, according to Wheeler, they ended up buying a smaller number of GPUs. (The newer silicon is expected to deliver 70 percent to 75 percent more performance than that of the current generation.) Perhaps more importantly, having the latest and greatest GPUs will help attract additional research dollars to the university, especially for AI-enabled research.
    ...
The new GPUs are certain to get a workout at IU. Researchers there are already applying AI techniques in areas like medical research and molecular genetics, cybersecurity, fraud prevention, and neuroscience, to name a few. Of course, the new system will also be expected to support more conventional HPC workloads, including the usual suspects such as climate modeling, genomic analysis, and particle physics simulations. Depending on the code employed, the GPUs could come in handy in these domains as well. “There were so many things being done algorithmically to really start to enable GPU use across a range of research disciplines and methods,” notes Wheeler.

To make up for the slight delay in GPU deployment, the university is upgrading its Carbonate cluster with 96 additional Tesla V100 accelerators. It was previously outfitted with 16 P100 GPUs and 8 V100 GPUs according to the system’s webpage, and was the main resource for IU researchers that needed modern AI hardware. The additional V100s will provide some extra capacity until phase two of Big Red 200 comes online.

Just to put this in the correct perspective,

    This is GA100 vs GV100
    There is no TU100

Also means that any tweet you see claiming nvidia has not taped out ampere is categorically false.

If GA100 is 75% faster than GV100, we can assume Ampere based Titan RTX will be ~66.67% faster than Turing based Titan RTX in everything.

if only, we can't compare how the 102, 103 and 104 parts scale in comparison to the 100.

Surely, but wishful thinking you can say. A game that 2080ti does ~4k60, it would be fantastic for 3080ti to do it ~4k100. :D

It all depends on the HPC workloads, but Volta still has more performance than the Turing when looking at a single GPU. That's why Volta remained the go-to GPU for AI related tasks.

"As of February 8, 2019, the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti is the best GPU for deep learning research on a single GPU system running TensorFlow.
A typical single GPU system with this GPU (Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti) will be:

    • 37% faster than the 1080 Ti with FP32, 62% faster with FP16, and 25% more expensive.
    • 35% faster than the 2080 with FP32, 47% faster with FP16, and 25% more expensive.
    • 96% as fast as the Titan V with FP32, 3% faster with FP16, and ~1/2 of the cost.
    • 80% as fast as the Tesla V100 with FP32, 82% as fast with FP16, and ~1/5 of the cost.
    2080 Ti is a Porsche 911, the V100 is a Bugatti Veyron
The V100 is a bit like a Bugatti Veyron. It's one of the fastest street legal cars in the world, ridiculously expensive, and, if you have to ask how much the insurance and maintenance is, you can't afford it. The RTX 2080 Ti, on the other hand, is like a Porsche 911. It's very fast, handles well, expensive but not ostentatious, and with the same amount of money you'd pay for the Bugatti, you can buy the Porsche, a home, a BMW 7-series, send three kids to college, and have money left over for retirement."
