Same here, I also block IP's via firewall and hostfile so it's not like my pc can even connect to those windows update servers in the first place unless I allow it, so why have the services automatically running in the background if there is no use for them to be? xD
Correct, I've no use for them running at all. This is the tips and tweaks thread, I asked for help on a very specific topic, I received a useful response, I learned something new, I gained further control of my pc... that's all there is to say.
Yeah, yeah... Only time I managed to brick Windows at home rig I was toying with security permissions of registry keys trying to get rid of notorious DCOM errors in event log. Now MS turned these events into warnings but now I just ignore them. Anyway, when you do regular backups you have no worries.
I used to know of a tool that would use the superadmin account to open applications such as regedit, but i can't remember its name of the life of me.
@Astyanax That is the most powerful weapon in my arsenal others(lesser) but valuable include RegFromApp(nirsoft) and RegConverter(sordum)

I don`t understand the need to search for files. I do this so seldom that I don`t need 3rd party tools.
I have several uses one example is when uninstalling a Steam game. A game will typically leave various files left on C drive, like config's, saves, etc. Doing a quick search with this program finds the left overs by usually using the games name. I can then delete them otherwise they remain.
