Howdy gurus I was just wondering about the new memory standard being used on these new cards and wanted to get your opinions if an upgrade is in order. Iam still rocking a Geforce Gtx 980 with DDR5, I remember back in the day when DDr3 vs 5 was like night and day so naturally iam thinking this new one schould be much Faster right? An entire Build is mandatory for me cpu,Motherboard pretty much everything.... My aging Rig is about 8 years old now if not older. Fx 8320e DDR3 memory 8 gb 1600mhz Asus M5780L board usb 3.0 -High end lol. Gtx 980 2 x Ssd 120 gb 2x Hdd 1tb Windows 10 Ryzen will be my cheepest option here I think? And how about that pcie 4.0 is that something I schould worry about or no? Thank you and sorry for the long text ect... Nick.
What resolution are you gaming at first of all? And what games are you really looking into Playing out of curiosity, thanks. Also for gaming on win 10, I would very strongly recommend going to 16gb of main ram, 8gb = X, will have problems.
Wait, are you looking to purchase a GPU or CPU? I'm asking because you said Ryzen would be your best option, which is a CPU. Don't purchase a GPU based on the VRAM it uses, look at its performance.
Main game I play is Metro Exodous, Borderlands 3 ect....I was saying I need both Gpu and cpu upgrade cause my system is so old,was hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. The monitor is only 1080p (el cheepo)
What is your budget for the new rig? If I was building a new gaming PC right now for best bang for buck, I would go with a ryzen 3600x and an rx 5700 (third party cooler). But I'm not and waiting for HDMI 2.1/Displayport 2.0 connectors to show up on graphics cards.

Going to go with Ryzen for sure 100% cause I would like to support the brand and I really respect how they came back from the brink to be able to compete with Intel ( no easy task) Now If money was no object I would grab the 9900k for the clockspeed alone. As far as Gpu goes I read that a Gtx 1080 is 2 x Faster then my 980 what about if I find a Used 1080ti at a good price? Does that one use the new DDR6 or 5 version? Don't go with 1080TI, you're better off with 5700XT. For CPU get anything just not the 3600X, you deserve better if you have the money for it, like 3800X or smth. But if you don't have the cash, just get the 5700XT with 3600X (but the 5700XT is a need, cpu can be any zen2 one)
Gameplay at 1080p, that what OP stated about the monitor. For real, what the best GPU for 1080p? RX 5700? Ok, that implies some details, right? Let's discuss. For gaming only, the 3600X is plenty. There are things to consider: The 3600X needs a motherboard, right? And RAM, isn't? Best smart investment is a solid base, and if the need arise just upgrade. A simple plan CPU 3600 or X variant Mobo B450 with good VRMs RAM : a decent 3200 CL14-16 RAM kit PSU - best to have a new one, never skimp on the PSU Now, after having the budget unknown we can still advice OP to get a 350€ card, even the he plays at 1080p? @nz3777 what is your budget? Will you try to sell your old computer, just to have some cash to start this project? Anyone can spend money, spending smart is where one needs to get the priorities in check
There would be little concrete use for PCIe 4.0 right now, but considering you used your old system for 8 years, can one really claim 4-5 years from now you wouldn't regret not getting a proper PCIe 4.0 mobo for the new Ryzen? That's the thing in my opinion. Some really enthusiastic (and wealthy enough) people here build a new kickass system every other year, but many of us need to try to look beyond the horizon as well.
That's why I insisted on budget and details, OP didn't said: Budget is not a problem, I remember that he stated in earlier threads that money doesn't grow on trees in his neighborhood.

And if you can get a used 1080ti for a decent price then go for it, they still kick ass.
Just nitpicking: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX offers almost the same features, minus the PCI-E 4.0 and minus $60. The PCI-E 4.0 will not make a difference, but the $60 diverted to a higher graphics card can. Just an opinion, don't crucify me for it.
True, but when buying a new CPU I would like to have a mobo that supports it right out of the box without having to worry about bios updates. Plus the regular 3600 is $50 cheaper than the X version with hardly any difference so in the end everything balances out.
^ you have a point, although that board comes prepared for the new CPUs. More opinions, the better. OP is spoiled for choice. Anyhow, the system you offered is solid. OP, try to sell your rig for whatever cash you can and just upgrade.
