Samsung Launches 240Hz G-Sync Compatible Curved CRG5 Gaming Monitor

While VA has its advantages, the high native contrast being the prime example, I'm getting pretty tired of seeing it in 240Hz displays. Even the best/most expensive VA displays seem unable to consistently deliver 144Hz without ghosting or smearing so I'm curious to why it keeps getting pushed even further. Certainly Samsung is invested in the technology but even so..

 

I like them, but there are certain use cases for different aspects ratios.

16:9 is mostly gaming, browsing resolution and movies usually have OK coverage.
21:9 is mostly movies and gaming. Browsing is not so great on them.
32:9 is too wide for most movies, games. But it is good for productivity if such screen is split via software to easily snap windows into places.

With this in mind, I may in time be compelled to buy 21:9 screen. Likely 2560x1080 @240Hz or with higher refresh rate. But that's not going to happen before HDR becomes common consumption material (Games, movies, ...).
And important criteria would be real gtg and resulting ghosting from motion. I would really loved to move from TN, but with high refresh rates...

 

Anyone here interested in 'curved' screens?

Just wondering, because if this manufacturer is producing curved screens (including TV) then, I'm guessing they have done their research and know there is a market for curved screens...yet, I cannot think of any reason why I would ever want a curved screen, for tv or pc.

I also get the feeling they have got a stockroom full of curved monitor frames and screens, and need to sell off this leftover stock.

 

I got one [curved] and i never would go back to a flat one [@ least for the pc] for tv i hate it.

 

I bought the ASUS ROG PG348Q UWQHD 100Hz G-Sync IPS Curved 34 inch monitor, and my wife has a Samsung equivalent. They're both waaaaay better than the flat Samsung 28 inch 4k monitor that preceded it.

All games I play at the native resolution and love it.

Can't say I'd want a curved TV, but for a one-person screen such as a monitor - I'd never go back.

 

Huh, well, I knew they had done their research, it's just a personal thing, just...always thought it had no point to it, and was just a marketing gimmick of some kind...simulations and V.Large screens, I totally get that, in some sort of a cockpit training vehicle, sure, but...just not for home use.

Not criticising anyone's personal choices, just...not for me?

 

If it's ultra wide it should be curved, it's a bit like triple screen gaming with 1 screen. How many people played with 3 screens in a straight line and didn't bend in the side ones? If it's not ultra wide doesn't matter much, that said there's an argument that the ideal screen would have every pixel the same distance from your eyes.
(I own an curved ultra wide btw).

 

I think it makes sense for a PC monitors where you're sitting directly in front of it.
I recently upgraded to a 27" monitor. Not huge by any stretch of the imagination, and yet even on that, the edges are not pointing at your head, and you get differences in colour due to the angle of light reflecting more at tighter angles.

Any bigger and I certainly would go for curved monitor.

 

Why why why 27inch 1080p.......CAN THEY FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD RELEASE A 1440p 27inch 240hz........I don't even care if its TN panel.....just give me 1440p 240hz!!!!

27inch is too small for curve but the wider you go the more important is the curve

 

1440p 240hz? even 2080ti wont run that fast, unless its esports, CS go, simple games

 

Most competitive players don't play with Ultra and High settings enabled which reduce frame rates considerably. I consider myself competitive and I play a lot of CSGO, APEX, and PUBG on my current 165hz 27" 1440p monitor and with my current rig and graphic settings I use in game I can drive 200fps+ easily with my RTX 2080. You are also thinking in the "now", new CPU's and graphic cards will be released over the next couple years that will allow 1440p 200fps+ with all the eye candy turned on easily.

 

The manufacturers probably realize they wouldn't sell too many of them since it's a pretty niche market. Probably just a sales thing.

 

Actually, the reason we see curved screens on anything but ultra-wides is due to gamma shift on VA panels. On the larger VA panels at typical viewing distances, Samsung panels will gamma shift at the edge of the screen on a flat panel, that's the reason for the curve. It actually has nothing to do with marketing.

It's also something you'll get used to almost immediately once you use one.

Im not even sure why anyone should pick this or the pg35vq for gaming.

Both have VA panels that will give smearing with dark colors, as i see it this panel type is not even suited for gaming if you are critical about your display and it's resons time.
The pg35vq even has a fan in it, imo that a total no go, way to many downsides.

Id recommend picking a good 144hz ips panel from LG or AUO instead, brand of the monitor is less important. If you are really critical about respons times and willing to sacrifice image quality then go TN ofc.

 

Ips are the ones that got smearing buddy in dark colors not va.
I never ever go back to ips or either Asus or LG there quality control is terrible.
I myself got the C32HG70 smearing is fixed with latest firmware.

 

I disagree with the IPS smearing remark. Can you experience ghosting/smearing.....well yes you can but not all IPS's have that issue. I have owned the Acer XB271HU (IPS) for the past 2 years and there isn't a bit of ghosting or smearing with it and yes I am a snob when it comes to things like that. You can find excellent IPS gaming monitors but you will spend $$$ to get one.
